BuddyPress: Building niche social networks in the age of Facebook dominance

This presentation is from http://etcDallas.com that was held in 2012.

BuddyPress is the social network that runs on your own site. BuddyPress recently had its 1 millionth download and is cruising through 1.5.x upgrades on its way to 1.6 and a big 1.7 release later this year. We’ve seen the demise of Ning as a real alternative in niche social networking and Drupal/Joomla remain options only for those with nerves of steel. BuddyPress remains a very popular for those familiar with the extremely popular WordPress way of life. While BuddyPress is pretty easy to customize right out of the box and much has been done to streamline the code in the past year — it still requires some HTML, CSS and PHP mastery to make it really shine. We’ll cover where BuddyPress is now, review the basic structure of BuddyPress complements and talk about some of the major plugins in a vast universe of BuddyPress plugins. Intermediate familiarity with the WordPress way of doing things is a definite plus.

Mike Pratt is a West Point graduate and spent 6 years in the Army as a Combat Engineer. After graduate school, he spent 11 years at Goldman Sachs where he ran the proprietary trading desk for the Media, Entertainment and Telecom sector. While at Goldman, Mike also led the equities trading technology development effort designing and overseeing large projects automating trading functions. He left Goldman to launch a statistical arbitrage hedge fund focusing on high-speed automated trading. His fund developed all of their own software and algorithms. Over the years, Mike became heavily involved in marketing, design and development for his wife’s fashion related enterprises. He even incorporated his fund’s algorithms into the intelligence of their site using the algorithms to help predict which gifts women would like. Mike eventually left finance to pursue marketing and technology full time. He spent a year doing business development for leading new media agency Carrot Creative in New York before venturing out on his own to launch Extra Sauce, focusing on user engagement experiences, applications and analytics. He also created and maintains the niche social network BugleNotes.com for West Point graduates and is the founder of Digital Dallas, an organization of industry professionals dedicated to helping brand Dallas as a digital hub.
