Seth Godin is famously known as a Rebel Marketer. He is also the Creative Marketing Head of Yahoo! and one of the most sought after speakers in the world. And guess what? I just found out he is the founder & CEO of Squidoo! (WOW!!!) So do not be surprised if his 10th installment titled ‘The Dip’ tells you stuff like Never give up, Don’t be a quitter and Quitters never win – is all a load of rubbish.

Godin states that you will never be the best in anything unless you learn to quit intelligently. He gives the examples of Jack Welch of GE who, upon becoming CEO, quit any industry the company couldn’t be Number 1 or 2 in because it was a waste of time and resources.

The example used in the book is that of ice cream flavors. Of all the flavors, vanilla is by far the most popular and in second place comes chocolate. We might expect that the differences in sales is pretty marginal. Shockingly, it has many times more sales than chocolate and most other flavors combined.

Another interesting example stated was Google search results — the first result on Google is clicked on more than ten times more than the second Google search result. That’s why you need to be best.

His entire book is about learning when to quit, and when to stick with something. The Author believes that quitting is a good thing, and no one will ever become the best at anything unless they are good at quitting. Godin explains that quitting is not the same at failing, and suggests that if one wants to be the best in the world, some strategic quitting is in order.

Though the book I also got introduced to Zipf’s Law — which upon reading was pretty interesting.

So moment of truth — The Score.
The Dip was a quick read as I finished it off in 2 hours.
It is not a great book but not a bad book either.
When you take the cost versus content, well it doesn’t actually wipe you off your feet, though it leaves you flabbergasted as to how in the world the author managed to write so much on such a simple topic.
