The 2026 NFL preseason opened with the Hall of Fame Game, while all 32 clubs prepare for preseason games and an Aug. 30 deadline to set 53-player rosters.

The 2026 NFL preseason opened Aug. 6 with the Hall of Fame Game between the Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers in Canton, Ohio, beginning the league-wide evaluation period before the regular season.

All 32 clubs were scheduled to begin training camp by July 28, according to the NFL. The first full preseason weekend is scheduled for Aug. 13-15, with the league’s calendar listing additional preseason games across the three-week schedule.

Roster decisions are due Aug. 30

The NFL has set Aug. 30 as the deadline for clubs to reduce their active and inactive rosters to a maximum of 53 players. That cutdown will require teams to make final decisions on players competing for roster spots during training camp and preseason play.

After the final roster reduction, the league calendar provides for practice-squad formation. Each club is allowed a 17-player practice squad, giving teams another mechanism to retain developing players and maintain depth after the 53-player limit takes effect.

The Aug. 30 cutdown is the next major league-wide personnel date. The preseason schedule and roster deadlines apply across all 32 NFL clubs as teams prepare for the regular season.

The NFL’s 2026 preseason began Aug. 6 with Arizona facing Carolina, while the league’s new calendar sets roster, trade and meeting deadlines.

The NFL’s 2026 preseason opened Aug. 6 with the Hall of Fame Game, giving the Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers the first matchup on the league’s national competition calendar.

The preseason opener also arrived as the league moved into a new cycle of operational deadlines. The NFL published its 2026-27 important-dates calendar on July 7, setting dates that will guide roster decisions, possible trades and league business across all 32 clubs.

What the opening game establishes

The Hall of Fame Game is identified as the 2026 preseason opener. The official preseason schedule lists the game for Aug. 6, while an NFL report on training camps names Arizona and Carolina as the participants.

That makes the game the first scheduled contest in the 2026 preseason, rather than a regular-season game. The approved league records establish the date and matchup, but the sources reviewed for this article do not provide a score or game outcome. No winner is reported here.

The opening matters beyond the individual matchup because it begins the NFL’s national competition calendar. It also marks the point at which the league’s published schedule of deadlines becomes relevant to teams, players and fans tracking the season’s progression.

Roster deadline comes Aug. 30

The league calendar lists Aug. 30 as the 53-man roster cutdown day. The date is an established deadline on the NFL’s schedule; it does not, by itself, identify which players will make a roster or which clubs will release players.

For the Cardinals, Panthers and the NFL’s other 30 clubs, the deadline provides a common point on the calendar for roster-related decisions. For players and fans, it identifies when the league’s published cutdown milestone arrives. The calendar sets the date, but the approved sources do not provide individual roster projections or decisions.

Trade deadline is set for Nov. 10

The NFL’s 2026-27 calendar also lists Nov. 10 as the 2026 trade deadline. That date is the league’s published deadline for the trading period described in the calendar.

The schedule does not establish that any particular trade will occur, nor does it identify teams or players who may be involved. It does give all 32 clubs a known date around which potential roster changes and trade activity will be measured.

League meeting scheduled for March 2027

Looking beyond the 2026 season, the calendar schedules the 2027 Annual League Meeting for March 21-24. The meeting is the next major league-wide date identified in the approved calendar after the November trade deadline.

The published schedule confirms when the meeting is set to take place, but the sources do not specify an agenda, proposed rule changes or decisions that will come from it. Those details should not be inferred from the date alone.

The NFL’s calendar is subject to league updates. For now, the confirmed sequence is the Aug. 6 Hall of Fame Game, the Aug. 30 53-man roster cutdown day, the Nov. 10 trade deadline and the March 21-24, 2027, Annual League Meeting.

Those dates give the 2026-27 season a defined operating framework as the preseason begins. The Hall of Fame Game starts the on-field calendar, while the subsequent deadlines identify when the league’s next major roster, transaction and governance milestones are scheduled to occur.

The NFL said an investigation found that Arizona Cardinals personnel executive Ryan Gold shared confidential information about 2026 draft selections and placed parlay bets on NFL and college games.

The NFL suspended Arizona Cardinals personnel executive Ryan Gold indefinitely after the league said its investigation found that he shared confidential information about the team’s 2026 draft selections before those picks were announced and participated in parlay bets on NFL and college games.

The league announced the discipline on July 24, 2026. The case combines two areas the NFL treats as central to its integrity rules: gambling by league personnel and the protection of non-public team information.

What the NFL said happened

The NFL said Gold provided confidential, non-public information about Cardinals selections in the 2026 NFL draft before the picks became public. The league also said he placed parlay bets involving NFL and college games.

Those statements describe the results of an NFL investigation and the league’s basis for its own discipline. They are not presented in the approved sources as a finding by a court or prosecutors.

The league’s announcement does not identify the precise number of bets, the amount wagered or the potential payouts. Those details remain unavailable in the approved source material.

Rules at the center of the case

The NFL’s gambling policy prohibits personnel from participating in or facilitating prohibited gambling. The policy also bars personnel from providing third parties with non-public information.

The reported conduct therefore involves more than the question of whether bets were placed. The league said Gold both engaged in betting activity and disclosed information that had not yet been released publicly. The two allegations are addressed by separate restrictions in the policy cited by the NFL.

That distinction matters for teams and league employees who may have access to private personnel decisions before they are announced. In this case, the information identified by the NFL concerned Cardinals draft selections, while the betting described by the league involved both professional and college games.

What is established—and what is not

The NFL’s announcement establishes an indefinite league suspension based on the league’s investigation. It does not establish that Gold committed a crime. The approved sources also do not establish a separate criminal or civil proceeding involving him.

The source material does not say that Gold fixed a game or that any game outcome was affected. The reported conduct concerns betting and disclosure of confidential information, not a stated allegation that a contest was manipulated.

That limit is important when assessing the public meaning of the case. A league suspension is an employment and competition-governance action under NFL rules. It should not be described as a criminal conviction or as proof that a particular game was compromised.

Discipline and what comes next

“Indefinite” means the NFL announced no fixed end date for Gold’s suspension. The available source packet does not provide a return date or a separate deadline for the discipline.

NFL enforcement materials describe league discipline and appeals processes, including the roles of the commissioner and designated league officers. Those materials show that an appeals framework exists for league discipline matters.

They do not, however, identify a specific appeal, hearing date or other scheduled next step in Gold’s case. The approved sources also do not report whether Gold has challenged the suspension.

For now, the confirmed action is the NFL’s indefinite suspension of a Cardinals personnel executive. The broader significance is the league’s stated enforcement of rules covering both prohibited gambling and the sharing of non-public information. Further details about the bets, any appeal and any action outside the NFL remain unconfirmed in the available material.

NFL training camps opened during the week of Aug. 3, beginning the league’s 2026 preparation cycle. Arizona and Carolina were first to have full teams on site ahead of the Aug. 6 Hall of Fame Game.

NFL training camps opened during the week of Aug. 3, launching the leaguewide preparation period for the 2026 season across all 32 clubs.

The Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers were the first teams to have their entire squads on site. They are scheduled to meet in the Hall of Fame Game on Aug. 6, providing the first scheduled preseason game of the NFL calendar.

The game is scheduled for Canton, Ohio, home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. It comes after the league’s training-camp cycle began, rather than marking the date every club opened camp. The NFL said camps opened during the week of Aug. 3; it did not state that every club began full-team work on Aug. 3 itself.

League coverage begins Aug. 3

NFL Network’s Inside Training Camp coverage began Aug. 3 at 10 a.m., accompanying the opening week of camp activity around the league.

Training camp is the NFL’s leaguewide preparation period before the regular season. For the 32 franchises, the opening of camp starts the formal 2026 buildup, with clubs assembling players and beginning their preseason preparation.

The NFL’s announcement identified Arizona and Carolina as the first clubs with their entire teams on site. That designation applies to the timing described by the league and does not establish an opening date or reporting status for every other team.

Likewise, the start of camp does not resolve team-level roster questions. The leaguewide announcement did not provide complete reporting details for each club, nor did it set out injuries, depth-chart decisions or eventual roster cuts. Those matters require separate reporting from individual teams.

Hall of Fame Game opens the on-field schedule

Arizona and Carolina are scheduled to play Aug. 6 in the Hall of Fame Game, moving the league from camp practices into its first scheduled preseason competition. The matchup gives both clubs an early place on the 2026 preseason calendar.

No score, record or standings implication is attached to the game before it is played. The NFL source identifies the contest as scheduled, not completed, and the training-camp announcement does not announce any final roster decisions for either club.

The Hall of Fame Game is the next confirmed league event in the training-camp timeline. It follows the Aug. 3 start of NFL Network coverage and precedes the broader preseason window set by the league.

Preseason runs Aug. 13-29

The NFL has scheduled the 2026 preseason for Aug. 13 through Aug. 29. That window follows the Aug. 6 Hall of Fame Game and provides the league’s defined preseason period before the regular season.

For fans and clubs nationwide, the calendar now has three confirmed markers: training camps opened during the week of Aug. 3; the Cardinals and Panthers are scheduled to play Aug. 6; and the preseason is set for Aug. 13-29.

The immediate next step is the Hall of Fame Game in Canton. Beyond that matchup, the NFL’s approved training-camp information establishes the preseason dates but does not provide club-by-club camp outcomes, player availability or finalized lineups.
