Aurora police reported a 10.5% decline in overall crime during the first half of 2026, continuing a two-year downward trend and marking lower figures across all seven major crime categories tracked by the department.

Category-level comparisons run through May 24 and measure the same period in 2025. Homicides were down 61.5%, the largest percentage decline reported. Motor-vehicle thefts fell 44.1%, while burglaries declined 26.9%.

Sex assaults were down 27.8%, and aggravated assaults fell 12.8%. Robberies declined 3.1%, while larceny was down 4.7%. The robbery and larceny figures were the smallest reductions among the seven categories, but both were still lower than in the comparable 2025 period.

The citywide overall figure is described as covering the first half of 2026, while the category figures run through May 24. Those are related midyear measures, but they do not use precisely identical reporting endpoints.

Continuous shoulder closures remain in both directions of Interstate 70 near Aurora’s Aerotropolis Parkway interchange, where the Colorado Department of Transportation’s construction project is scheduled to continue through November 2026.

CDOT’s project information, updated Aug. 8, 2026, says the closures are in place 24 hours a day, seven days a week within the project limits. The work is changing travel conditions near a developing part of Aurora and along a route used by people traveling toward Denver International Airport and the Colorado Aerotropolis.

Where the closures are located

The project is on I-70 east of E-470, with Aurora identified as the nearest city. The work area is also described as part of the Aurora and Adams County development area.

In addition to the I-70 shoulder closures, construction affects East Colfax Avenue and the I-70 Frontage Road. The closure information applies within the project limits. It does not establish that the entire I-70 corridor is closed or affected.

CDOT has not provided a specific traffic-delay estimate in the supplied project information. The agency also has not identified a new incident on Aug. 8 or supplied a separate end date for each individual closure.

Aurora’s Picadilly Interchange Is Open, but Summer Lane Impacts May Remain

Aurora’s diverging-diamond interchange at I-70 and Picadilly Road is open to vehicle traffic in all directions, but intermittent lane closures may still be needed later in summer 2026 for final construction activities.

The tuberculosis investigation at the GEO Aurora ICE Processing Center remains unresolved after health officials say the facility did not provide the access and records needed to identify people who may have been exposed.

The Adams County Health Department says it confirmed one laboratory-confirmed case of active tuberculosis involving a detainee. The department says its investigation remains incomplete. The Department of Homeland Security disputes that an active case has been confirmed at the Aurora facility.

Health officials say records and access are missing

Adams County says it requested access to the patient, medical records, housing and movement information, and other records needed to identify possible contacts. The department said the information and access were not voluntarily provided, prompting a public-health order issued June 25, 2026.

Those records are needed to interview the patient, review medical information, identify and notify possible contacts, coordinate testing, and arrange treatment or follow-up when appropriate.

Without the information, the county says it cannot determine the full scope of possible exposure. Potentially affected groups include other detainees, employees, contractors, visitors, and people who have since been transferred or released from the facility.

State officials set a July 17 deadline

On July 15, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment demanded immediate cooperation from GEO Group and asked the facility to provide investigators access no later than July 17.

Colorado Public Radio reported that the state sought access, records and information related to the case and people who may have been exposed. State officials said delays made it harder to identify, test and treat people who may have been exposed.

The latest verified independent report reviewed for this article, published by Colorado Newsline on July 22, said the July 17 deadline passed without the access and information health officials said they needed. The investigation remained open, and the scope of possible exposure was undetermined.

County and federal officials give conflicting accounts

Adams County said on July 14 that it had confirmed one laboratory-confirmed active TB case involving a detainee. The department also said it was aware of reports of additional possible cases but had not independently verified them.

CBS Colorado reported that a DHS spokesperson said Aurora had no confirmed active TB cases. DHS also said the facility had complied with federal and Colorado communicable-disease requirements.

The competing statements do not establish an outbreak or confirm additional cases. They show that the public-health investigation remains contested while county and state officials seek access and documentation.

What visitors and families should know

In guidance issued July 16, Adams County said visitor risk remained low based on the information available at that time. The department said visitors did not need to wear masks solely to protect themselves from TB and did not recommend changes to routine work or visitation schedules.

The county said the greatest concern was for people who had prolonged contact with the person with TB and people who may be immunocompromised. People known to have been exposed may need testing, a risk assessment and follow-up testing eight to 10 weeks after exposure.

People who have left the facility and are unsure whether they were exposed can seek evaluation from a health care provider, including the Denver Health Tuberculosis Clinic, according to the county’s tuberculosis frequently asked questions. Further public-health guidance depends on obtaining the patient information, medical records and movement data needed to complete contact tracing.

Aurora’s New ZYN Campus Is Operating as Jobs, Investment and Health Debate Continue

Philip Morris International has opened its Aurora manufacturing campus and begun commercial production of ZYN nicotine pouches, turning a long-planned project into an operating facility while renewing debate over public incentives and nicotine-related health risks.

PMI announced the opening July 27, 2026. The campus is in northeast Aurora near 48th Avenue and Harvest Road, on a 148-acre site with approximately 780,000 square feet of manufacturing, packaging, warehousing and distribution space.

What opened in Aurora

PMI said commercial production began in July. The company now describes the project as approximately $1.2 billion in planned capital investment from 2024 through 2028, up from the $600 million figure announced when the Aurora project was unveiled in 2024.

PMI said approximately $1 billion of the planned investment had been incurred by the July 27 announcement. The company said the remaining plan includes additional production capacity, site expansion, equipment, infrastructure and future production capabilities.

The change reflects the difference between the original project announcement and PMI’s current long-term investment plan. The facility is no longer merely proposed: Aurora now has an operating nicotine-product manufacturing campus.

Jobs and economic projections

PMI expects the Aurora campus to directly employ approximately 500 people once fully operational and support 1,000 indirect jobs. PMI also cited an economic-impact study by EConsult Solutions that estimates approximately $550 million in annual economic impact once the operation is established.

Those figures are projections, not a final count of jobs or a completed measurement of the facility’s economic effects. Axios reported that more than 170 jobs had been filled at the Aurora site and that the jobs paid about $90,000 annually on average, offering an early snapshot of the workforce.

PMI and Colorado officials have described the campus as an advanced-manufacturing investment that can add jobs, strengthen the supply chain and expand production and export activity. Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman has also pointed to expected economic activity and increased tax revenue as benefits for the city.

Public incentives remain part of the debate

Colorado previously approved up to $4.5 million in job-growth tax credits for the site, according to Denver7’s earlier report on the project. That is a state incentive; the available reporting does not establish it as a direct payment by the city of Aurora.

The public-support question has remained central since the project was announced. Supporters have emphasized employment, investment and manufacturing capacity, while critics have questioned whether government incentives should be used to attract a manufacturer of nicotine products.

Why health advocates object

Public-health advocates quoted in Denver7’s earlier coverage warned about nicotine addiction and potential youth uptake. Their comments are criticism of the product category and the policy decision to provide incentives; they are not a finding that the Aurora facility itself has caused a specific health effect.

The FDA lists 20 ZYN nicotine pouch products manufactured by Swedish Match USA as authorized for marketing in the United States. The agency says authorized products may be lawfully sold, but authorization does not mean the products are safe or “FDA approved.” FDA guidance also says all tobacco products are harmful and potentially addictive.

For Aurora parents and residents, that distinction matters. The plant’s economic promises and the products’ regulatory status are separate questions: federal authorization permits specified products to be marketed under applicable rules, but it is not an endorsement or a safety determination.

What residents should watch next

The next milestones include hiring, progress toward PMI’s planned investment through 2028 and independent measurements of the campus’s local economic effects. Residents can also expect continued scrutiny of the state tax credit, nicotine regulation and public-health concerns surrounding nicotine pouches.

Aurora now has a major new manufacturing employer, but the largest job and economic-impact numbers remain expectations. The unresolved local question is whether the promised benefits will match the public incentives and withstand the health debate surrounding the products made there.

Regular gasoline prices varied by 8 cents per gallon across three Aurora 7-Eleven listings reviewed August 1, while diesel was listed at the same $5.099 price at all three locations.

Regular gas ranges from $4.099 to $4.179

The lowest regular-gas price in the sample was $4.099 per gallon at 18883 East Hampden Avenue. The 599 South Airport Boulevard listing showed $4.139, and the 7451 South Gartrell Road location listed regular gas at $4.179.

That creates an 8-cent spread between the lowest and highest regular-gas listings. On a 15-gallon fill-up, the difference would be about $1.20 before accounting for extra driving.

Diesel listings match in this sample

Diesel was listed at $5.099 per gallon at East Hampden, South Airport Boulevard and South Gartrell Road. That means the three-station sample showed no diesel-price difference, even though prices can change during the day.

These are station-level listings, not an official citywide Aurora average. Each 7-Eleven page says gas prices were updated within 24 hours, so drivers should check the exact station before filling up.

How Aurora compares with the Denver metro average

Aurora’s Stage 1 drought restrictions remain in effect while the city and Aurora Public Schools dispute whether irrigation practices at nine school sites meet conservation expectations.

The immediate issue is enforcement, not a confirmed service shutoff. Aurora Water’s current guidance lists Aurora as being in Stage 1, while reporting from the Denver Gazette and CBS Colorado does not establish that the city has cut irrigation service at any APS property.

What Aurora’s Stage 1 rules require

The Aurora City Council approved the Stage 1 drought declaration at its April 6, 2026, meeting after continuing drought, low snowpack and reduced reservoir levels put pressure on the city’s water supply.

The city’s general Stage 1 rules limit irrigation of high-water-use grass to two days per week and prohibit outdoor watering between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Aurora has also set a broader goal of reducing water use by 20% among residents, businesses and city facilities.

Stage 1 restrictions also cover water waste, including irrigation leaks, water pooling, watering sidewalks or streets and unrestricted hose use. The city’s public guidance lists a drought surcharge for residential, multifamily and commercial use above 110% of a customer’s winter-quarter average. Aurora Water has also described surcharges for irrigation accounts as part of the drought response.

Why APS became a flashpoint

Mayor Mike Coffman raised the dispute after saying he saw very green lawns at Rangeview High School and other APS properties. In a July 9 report, the Denver Gazette quoted Aurora Water as saying June usage data showed nine of the district’s 61 sites were out of compliance with the city’s watering expectations.

APS is a large water user and is part of Aurora Water’s variance program. The program can allow large irrigators to stagger watering across multiple properties. Under the explanation provided by Aurora Water, a participant may water on different days, but no individual irrigation zone may be watered more than two days per week and the user must stay within set water-use parameters.

Aurora Water said the nine sites would receive warnings. Coffman warned that irrigation service could eventually be shut off at schools that remain noncompliant. Aurora Water said any such shutoff would apply to outdoor irrigation, not water used inside school buildings. The city’s enforcement sequence can include warnings, fines and, eventually, service termination.

APS says it is following an approved plan

APS says it is taking the drought seriously and following a conservation plan developed with Aurora Water. The district says the approved plan targets a 20% reduction in water use and limits outdoor watering to two days per week.

APS also says it has not received fines for excessive water use. Aurora Water told the Denver Gazette that no fines had been issued to APS at the time of the reporting, although the nine flagged sites were expected to receive warnings. CBS Colorado reported that Aurora Water described the additional charges as surcharges rather than fines.

That leaves an important distinction for residents: APS’s districtwide conservation plan does not, by itself, prove that every school site met the city’s expectations. At the same time, the city’s identification of nine sites does not mean a formal penalty or irrigation shutoff has already occurred.

What remains unresolved

The dispute could turn on whether APS brings the nine sites into compliance and whether Aurora Water keeps the district in its variance program. Available reporting does not confirm that Aurora has shut off irrigation service at any APS school.

Residents should watch for official updates about warnings, penalties, irrigation shutoffs or any move from Stage 1 to stricter drought restrictions. For now, Aurora residents remain subject to the city’s outdoor watering limits, including two days per week for high-water-use grass and no watering between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
