The increase matters for people who need a safe, climate-controlled place to sleep during Arizona’s summer heat. ABC15 reported that AZCEND generally served 36 to 40 people nightly earlier in the season before demand climbed above 50.

When the 40-person limit is reached, AZCEND works with the City of Chandler to identify additional placements. ABC15 reported that many people are connected with other resources, while some decline alternate programming. In those cases, staff provide water and extra food as people look for a cooler place to sleep.

What happens when the shelter fills

The capacity issue concerns AZCEND’s overnight program, not every heat-relief location in Chandler. The city and the regional Maricopa Association of Governments Heat Relief Network list additional cooling and respite sites, but those locations may offer daytime relief rather than an overnight cot.

The recent demand figures do not establish a season-wide average, a permanent shortage or a formal decision by Chandler to expand overnight shelter capacity.

How Chandler’s overnight program works

AZCEND’s overnight service is scheduled every night from June 15 through Sept. 18, 2026. The program lists overnight hours of 7 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. at 345 S. California St. in Chandler.

The City of Chandler says people seeking overnight service must check in at the AZCEND day respite center between 6 and 7 p.m. AZCEND’s program page gives a more specific cutoff, saying check-in begins at 6 p.m. and continues through 6:45 p.m. each night while beds are available. People seeking a cot should arrive early and confirm current availability.

When overnight placement is available, guests receive a meal and a cot in a safe, climate-controlled setting. The city says guests may also receive breakfast and use daytime respite services, including air conditioning, hydration, snacks, restrooms, showers, laundry services and uninterrupted rest.

Other cooling and respite options

Chandler’s listed cooling centers include Basha Library, Chandler Nature Center, Downtown Library, Hamilton Library, Sunset Library, the Salvation Army Chandler Corps and Tumbleweed Recreation Center. The city also lists its Neighborhood Resources Department as a cooling-center location.

These locations are scheduled to operate during the city’s May 1 through Oct. 31 heat-relief period, with hours varying by site. They provide cooling, water or daytime respite and should not be treated as equivalent to AZCEND’s overnight service.
