The Village of Hoffman Estates says the cooling centers are available when extreme weather is predicted. The list includes Triphahn Center at 1685 Higgins Road, The Club at Prairie Stone at 5050 Sedge Blvd., Willow Recreation Center at 3600 Lexington Drive, and the Hoffman Estates Police Department at 411 W. Higgins Road for 24-hour use if needed.

Where residents can go

Triphahn Center is open Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Club at Prairie Stone is open Monday through Thursday from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Willow Recreation Center is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The police department site is listed as a 24-hour center if needed. Residents should still check hours before heading out if they plan to visit late in the day.

Why the centers are open

The National Weather Service says excessive heat is forecast for June 29 through July 2, with heat indices expected to top 105 degrees. Its extreme heat warning for the Hoffman Estates area says dangerous heat and humidity can create hazardous conditions, especially for older adults and people with health conditions.

Cook County also lists cooling centers as a backup resource and says residents who need shelter should contact a center first to confirm hours and availability.

WTTW has also reported on the broader Chicago-area heat emergency, underscoring that this is a regional event, not just a village-level issue.

For residents, the practical takeaway is simple: if your home is hot, you work outdoors, or you need a break from the heat, use a cooling center early rather than waiting until you feel sick.
