The Pentagon confirmed that the National Guard mission in Washington, D.C. will run through Jan. 20, 2029—or until terminated by the President. ([apnews.com](Associated Press)) For residents, that means a prolonged security and policing-support presence as the District continues challenging the deployment in court.

According to the Pentagon’s confirmation reported by AP, the mission’s new end date is Jan. 20, 2029, after it had previously been extended and was set to expire at the end of this year.

How the mission is set up in D.C.

The D.C. National Guard’s Joint Task Force (JTF-DC) says the Guard was activated to support local and federal law-enforcement efforts aimed at restoring order, aligning with a presidential executive order declaring a crime emergency.

The JTF-DC operational overview lists 4,442 assigned personnel (current as of 1600 July 16, 2026).

What troops can (and can’t) do

WOSU reports that, once in D.C., Guard members have been deputized as special police by the U.S. Marshals Service and have been issued a firearm—described as rare for a domestic National Guard deployment.

At the same time, WOSU reports that Guard troops are not authorized to make arrests. They can detain someone until arresting officers arrive.

Cost pressure stays front and center

Cost is a major point of contention. WOSU reports that the deployment’s current cost is more than $3 million per day, based on a Congressional Budget Office estimate.

WOSU also reports that a watchdog estimate projects the extended mission could cost between $2.5 billion and $3.4 billion in total, depending on how many troops remain in the city.

D.C. Council criticism: “still in court”

WTOP reports that D.C. Council Chair Phil Mendelson and other councilmembers criticized plans to keep National Guard troops in the District through the next Inauguration Day unless the president ends it sooner, and urged states to recall troops after events such as July Fourth and “America 250” conclude.

WTOP also reports Mendelson said the District remains in court challenging the deployment.

What the court decision means (and what it doesn’t)

The District’s earlier lawsuit produced a memorandum opinion in which the court addressed only the District’s Administrative Procedure Act (APA) “contrary to law” claims related to the Home Rule Act, the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC), and Title 32.

The court granted preliminary relief on those APA-related claims but issued an administrative stay for 21 days, keeping the order paused until Dec. 11, 2025. ([oag.dc.gov](Oag)) The court also stated it made no ruling on preliminary relief for any remaining claims.

The Pentagon’s later, Pentagon-confirmed extension through 2029 is a separate development, so residents should expect continued legal and policy updates as the case moves forward.
