The estimates draw on information from more than 17,000 law-enforcement agencies covering about 96% of the U.S. population. More than 15,000 agencies submitted data through the National Incident-Based Reporting System, or NIBRS, covering nearly 90% of the population.

The FBI’s Crime Data Explorer now publishes monthly data, allowing the bureau to release preliminary trends sooner than in the past. The faster schedule improves timeliness, but it also means the early annual figures should be read as an initial estimate rather than a final accounting.

Why the numbers can change

Participation in the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting program is voluntary for agencies outside the federal system, and not every department reports every month. Agencies are responsible for correcting errors in previously submitted data, and those corrections can be incorporated into later releases.

Independent analysis supports the broad direction of the FBI’s findings. The Council on Criminal Justice’s mid-year 2026 report examined monthly crime data from 36 large U.S. cities. India Duncan, 25, and Joshua Velez, 30, were taken into custody Tuesday, August 4, 2026, according to WXXI News. Rochester police accuse both of physically abusing the child, who died May 18.

The shooting occurred at approximately 8:43 p.m. Sunday, August 2, according to the Yonkers Police Department. Police said the suspect fired eight rounds from a handgun across the intersection toward a group of people before fleeing on foot.

Brandon Garcia killed; four teenagers wounded

Suspect detained minutes after shooting

Officers took the suspect into custody within minutes, approximately one block from the scene on St. Casimir Avenue, according to police. Investigators said they recovered a firearm believed to have been used in the shooting, ballistic evidence, surveillance video and other items of evidentiary value.

Police characterized the incident as a targeted act of group violence rather than a random attack. Investigators alleged that the suspect approached the intersection on foot, fired toward the group and fled eastbound on Elm Street. Shaquille Richards, 32, and Alexandra Nicks, 32, were found guilty of using a firearm to kill during a racketeering murder and of murder in aid of racketeering, according to KPRC 2.

What happened in Third Ward

The shooting occurred October 16, 2017, in Houston’s Third Ward. Prosecutors said Richards and Nicks led the 103 street gang and ordered members to carry out a retaliatory attack in territory associated with the rival Young Scott Block gang.

According to the Jackson Police Department statement reported by WBBJ, the incident was reported Wednesday, July 29, in a parking lot in the 1300 block of South Highland Avenue. Police identified the arrested man as Princeton Dotson of Henderson, Tennessee.

Police said a woman reported that a man exposed himself and performed a lewd act in public. The reported victim was not identified.

Henderson police made arrest

Officers with the Henderson Police Department located and arrested Dotson Friday night, according to the Jackson police statement. He was then transported to the Madison County Criminal Justice Complex and booked on a reported charge of public indecency–indecent exposure.

The arrest and booking are allegations and do not establish guilt. The case remains subject to court proceedings and any later prosecutorial or judicial action.

Police said Williams died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and that detectives are confident he acted alone. That lone-actor assessment is an investigative conclusion and could be updated if new evidence emerges.

In the latest police update reported by AP, two wounded people had been treated and released, three were listed as stable and two were in critical condition.

Police Chief Matthew Hicks said an off-duty Idaho State Police trooper and an armed civilian fired at Williams and diverted him from the restaurant. Their identities had not been released in the latest report.

Motive remains unknown

As of Tuesday, Aug. 4, investigators had not established a motive. Authorities had not released verified evidence showing that the shooting was driven by a particular ideology, grievance, mental-health condition or relationship.

Police also warned about misinformation that identified another man as the shooter. AP reported that the man named in those claims had no involvement in the attack.

Williams died before any prosecution and has not been convicted or legally adjudicated in connection with the shooting.

Twin Falls connections

The victims, responders and suspect had documented connections to Twin Falls and the surrounding community. Austin “A.J.” Scott James, who was critically wounded, formerly worked for the Twin Falls Police Department and the Idaho State Police, according to his father, Marcus Scott James.

Terry Dudley, a North Star Taxi driver, was shot while charging one of the company’s Teslas in a parking lot next to the restaurant. The company’s owner told AP that Dudley was flown to a Boise hospital with serious injuries.

Williams attended the College of Southern Idaho from August 2022 through December 2023, according to college President L. Dean Fisher. He did not graduate or earn a certificate. AP reported that Williams served in the student senate and was unanimously impeached by fellow senators in February 2023.

Neither driver stopped to render aid. The latest official case information listed both subjects as unknown and described the vehicles as a black sedan and a gold Ford Expedition.

Local 10 reported that investigators saw Alvarez inside a blue Infiniti G35 during alleged takeover activity at two locations, including NW 25th Street and NW 76th Avenue. Deputies said the events involved vehicles blocking intersections while spectators watched or recorded cars performing reckless driving patterns.
