The final network included 14 sites open to all children and youth and 25 sites serving participants enrolled in summer programs. That distinction mattered for families seeking drop-in meals: the 39-site total did not mean every location was available to any child who arrived without enrollment.

Budget pressure limited sponsorship capacity

DCYF’s 2026-2027 nutrition handbook said the city’s expected budget deficit would allow the department to sponsor roughly 40 to 50 summer sites. The handbook also said DCYF typically receives more applications than it can select.

That was a planning estimate, not the final count. Independent reporting by SFGATE and Bay City News Service identified 39 DCYF-sponsored sites for the 2026 summer program.

Open and enrolled sites served different groups

Under DCYF’s rules, an open site serves both young people enrolled in the program and youth from the surrounding community. A closed-enrolled site serves only youth enrolled in that program.

Only the 14 open sites were generally available to children and youth from the broader community without enrollment in a participating summer program. Families using one of the 25 enrollment-based locations needed to be part of that site’s summer program.

The California Department of Education’s San Francisco County listing identifies the city-sponsored entries as the San Francisco Mayor’s Office’s Summer Food Service Program sites and separately lists SFUSD locations under a different program designation. The state database defines open and closed status at the site level, so families needed to check the individual listing rather than assume every summer-meal location offered drop-in service.

Schedules varied across San Francisco

The state’s 2026 site-level record shows that the city-sponsored network did not operate on one uniform schedule. San Francisco entries ended on different dates, including July 24, July 29, July 31, Aug. 5, Aug. 6 and Aug. 7.

A smaller group operated through the program’s final date of Aug. 14. The state listing shows that group included Garfield Clubhouse at 1271 Treat Ave., the San Francisco Public Library Main Branch at 100 Larkin St., St. Mary’s Park and Recreation Site at 95 Justin Drive, Wah Mei School at 1555 Irving St. and the Willie Mays Hunters Point Boys and Girls Club at 195 Kiska Road.

The San Francisco Public Library separately listed Lunch at the Library at the Main Library for children ages 0 through 18, with no income restrictions and first-come, first-served seating. The state’s summer-meal database listed the Main Branch as an open city-sponsored site through Aug. 14. Any separate library programming after that date should be verified with the library rather than treated as part of the ended DCYF summer network.

What families should take from the final count

The DCYF handbook described the overall 2026 Summer Meals Program as running from June 8 through Aug. 14, 2026. The San Francisco site listings show many city-sponsored locations operating from June 15 through their individual closing dates. As of Saturday, Aug. 15, the DCYF-sponsored summer network has ended, and families should not assume a listed summer-meal location is still serving meals.

The available records show a constrained city-sponsored network, but they do not establish that San Francisco had fewer sponsored sites than in a prior year. DCYF’s handbook documents the expected budget pressure and projected capacity range; the final reported result was 39 sites, split between open community locations and enrollment-based programs.
