The latest figures, reported by the Associated Press, are not final. The agency’s previous totals were 579 dead and 1,924 missing. Counts are expected to remain fluid as teams reach isolated communities, recover victims and verify reports from local authorities.

Weather limits Nepal’s rescue access

Poor weather temporarily halted helicopter operations in Nepal, limiting access to areas cut off by flooding, landslides and damaged roads. Ground searches continued across eight affected districts despite difficult terrain and unstable conditions.

Rescuers were also working at the Upper Trishuli-1 hydropower project in Rasuwa district, where authorities believed more than 100 people may have been trapped inside a tunnel filled with thick mud. The estimate remains uncertain and is not a confirmed death toll. The Nepali Army said the mud was roughly 4 to 5 feet deep in places and that limited helicopter landing areas were making the operation more difficult.

The flooding damaged homes, markets, roads, bridges, customs facilities and hydropower infrastructure. Those losses have isolated communities, complicated rescue access and slowed the delivery of food, shelter and medical assistance.

China is reporting a separate toll

China has reported a separate tally for the disaster in Tibet: seven people dead and 554 missing. Those numbers apply to Chinese territory and use a different geographic and administrative basis from Nepal’s figures. They should not be added to Nepal’s totals.

China’s Ministry of Emergency Management said on August 29 that land search teams continued detailed searches through the debris at Gyirong Port, including broad grid-style checks of priority areas. The Chinese government has also ordered casualty verification, continued rescue and relief work, and monitoring for secondary disasters.

A barrier lake remains a secondary risk

The disaster began after a sudden surge of water and debris entered the Bhote Koshi River corridor. The World Health Organization said preliminary information points to a possible upstream ice avalanche and temporary damming of the Lhende River, but assessments are still underway.

Authorities are monitoring a newly formed high-altitude barrier lake and other hazards. Current reporting does not establish that the lake has burst or caused a new major flood. Its presence nevertheless adds risk in a region where rain, unstable slopes and damaged roads can quickly change rescue conditions.

Health and relief needs are expanding

WHO said about 10,000 households were reported to need immediate relief. Three health posts were fully damaged, one hospital was partially damaged and access to two hospitals was affected.

Displacement, overcrowding, damaged water and sanitation systems and disrupted medical services increase the risk of injuries, unsafe water and food, diarrheal and respiratory illnesses, vector-borne disease and mental-health needs. Nepal’s health authorities and partners are working to maintain trauma care, first aid, blood supplies, emergency response capacity and disease surveillance.

For families, travelers and foreign nationals in the affected border corridor, official advisories and verified missing-person information are more reliable than unconfirmed social-media reports. Search teams are expected to continue recovering and identifying victims, clearing roads, delivering relief and reassessing the barrier lake and weather conditions.

Deaths, records and disruption

France recorded around 1,000 additional deaths at the height of the wave, while Spain logged 327 estimated heat-attributable deaths over five days. AP also reported Germany’s new national temperature record and the Czech Republic’s hottest day ever. France placed more than three-quarters of the country under a red weather alert at the peak of the heat wave.

Why the warning is getting louder

WHO Europe says heat-health action plans, cooling centers, hydration checks for older adults, and heat-safe workplaces can save lives. A World Weather Attribution study found that the June 2026 event would have been virtually impossible in 1976 and far more likely today, underscoring that extreme heat is now a recurring risk rather than a one-off anomaly.
