Chula Vista has moved the 2026 benchmarking deadline to June 30 for covered larger buildings and switched reporting to direct Portfolio Manager sharing.

Chula Vista has extended the 2026 building energy benchmarking deadline to June 30, giving owners and property managers of covered larger buildings more time to file data under the city’s Building Energy Saving Ordinance.

The update applies to covered buildings in Chula Vista, especially larger multifamily, commercial and industrial properties with 20,000 square feet or more of gross floor area. It does not affect every property owner in the city.

What changed for this year

The city’s materials also show a reporting workflow change. Instead of using the older submission process, covered property teams now use direct ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager account sharing to complete benchmarking with the city.

That makes this a compliance update, not a general sustainability feature or a citywide rebate announcement. Owners, landlords, brokers and managers who handle covered buildings should check whether benchmarking is still pending and make sure their Portfolio Manager setup matches the city’s current instructions.

Why property teams should pay attention

The city says no-cost ASHRAE Level 2 energy audits are available to some eligible participants, with limited availability. Those audits are tied to the program’s requirements, including participation standards set by the city.

For landlords and managers, the practical takeaway is simple: the deadline moved, but the obligation did not disappear. The extra time may help with scheduling, data gathering and account access, but covered buildings still need to comply.

That makes this a near-term operations item for anyone responsible for a covered building in Chula Vista, especially during a busy summer stretch when property staff may already be handling leases, maintenance and budgeting.
