The Gaston County Board of Commissioners approved the increase in a 4-3 vote on July 14, raising the county’s local operating contribution to Gaston County Schools to $59 million for 2026-27. The decision applies countywide, including the system that serves Stanley Middle School at 317 Hovis Road.

How the $5 million will be divided

Gaston County Schools said in its July 29 budget explanation that approximately $600,000 of the increase must be distributed to charter schools under state law. That leaves approximately $4.4 million for Gaston County Schools.

The district’s stated breakdown of the remaining funds includes $2.1 million to increase local supplements for teachers and other certified employees, $1.28 million for state-mandated increases in health insurance premiums and retirement contributions, $800,000 to provide raises for employees paid with local funds, and $220,000 to operate W.B. Beam Intermediate School in Cherryville during the 2026-27 school year.

The vote does not establish a separate dollar amount for Stanley Middle School or guarantee a new school-level program. The money supports the district’s broader operating plan, with school-level effects depending on how Gaston County Schools implements its budget and staffing decisions.

What it means for Stanley

Stanley Middle School is part of Gaston County Schools and is located at 317 Hovis Road in Stanley. For local parents, students, and employees, the most direct connection to the county decision is through that school and the districtwide services, personnel, and compensation systems it shares with other Gaston County schools.

The additional funding is intended to help maintain employee compensation and benefits and support the district’s operating priorities as classes resume. Stanley Middle School’s website lists August 12 as the first day of school for the 2026-27 year.

The funding does not end the district’s financial pressure

Gaston County Schools said it must take a cautious approach to spending and hiring in 2026-27. School-level hiring this summer was limited to 75% of vacant positions, and the district said 53 school vacancies identified by principals would not be filled as of July 22. Those vacancies included 27 classroom teachers, 14 regular-education teacher assistants, eight custodians, two school media specialist or librarian positions, one school counselor, and one school clerical position.

The district also said central-department hiring is limited to critical positions and that supervisors were advised to anticipate a 10% reduction in department budgets. The added county funding therefore provides support for the adopted operating plan without resolving all staffing or budget pressures.

Independent reporting by the Charlotte Observer described the vote in the context of previous staff cuts, the risk of additional layoffs, and the district’s compensation challenges. Earlier public-media reporting by WUNC/WFAE also documented questions about the transparency of earlier funding discussions. Those issues remain important context, but they were not eliminated by the July 14 vote.

For Stanley families, the practical questions as the school year begins will be whether key positions are filled, how the district implements employee supplements and raises, and whether Gaston County Schools can maintain services while operating under the remaining hiring and spending limits.
