New Rochelle’s Centre Avenue Bridge over I-95 remains closed to vehicles and pedestrians during repairs, with posted detours in place and reopening scheduled no later than September 1, weather permitting.

New Rochelle’s Centre Avenue Bridge over I-95 remains closed to vehicles and pedestrians during a summer repair project, sending drivers and pedestrians onto posted detours. The closure began at approximately 9 p.m. on June 29, 2026, and the bridge is scheduled to reopen no later than Tuesday, September 1, weather permitting.

The New York State Thruway Authority said approximately 3,400 vehicles use the 68-year-old bridge each day. The work schedule is weather-dependent and subject to change, so the September 1 date is a deadline in the current plan rather than a guarantee that conditions will not alter the schedule.

What is closed and how long it is expected to last

The Centre Avenue crossing over I-95 is closed in both directions. The restriction applies to pedestrians as well as vehicles, meaning people who normally walk across the bridge must use the posted pedestrian detour.

The current plan calls for the bridge to reopen no later than September 1. Until then, drivers cannot cross Centre Avenue over I-95, and pedestrians must follow the marked route around the closure.

Posted detours for drivers and pedestrians

Eastbound drivers are directed to use Warren Street, Union Avenue, Memorial Highway and Huguenot Street.

Westbound drivers are directed through Memorial Highway, Division Street, Union Avenue and Warren Street.

Pedestrians should use Warren Street, Union Avenue, Memorial Highway and Huguenot Street in both directions. Variable message signs in the area are being used to alert travelers to the closure and changing work conditions.

Repairs include reconstruction, substructure work and new sidewalks

The project includes partial demolition and reconstruction, joint and bearing repairs, concrete substructure repairs, new sidewalks and new pavement.

Crews will also raise the bridge slightly to provide additional vertical clearance over I-95.

Overnight I-95 lane closures may affect highway travelers

Work is scheduled during both daytime and nighttime hours. Overnight lane closures on I-95 may be required as needed to allow crews to work safely beneath the bridge.

The shoulders below Centre Avenue are closed for construction equipment, including equipment used for bridge jacking. The highway restrictions are temporary work-zone changes, not a continuous closure of I-95. Travelers should watch for signs and changing lane patterns, particularly during overnight trips.

What New Rochelle travelers should expect

The detours are expected to remain in place through August and potentially until September 1. Drivers and pedestrians should allow extra time, follow posted signs and avoid attempting to cross the closed Centre Avenue bridge.

Because the construction schedule is weather-dependent and subject to change, travelers should check current traffic alerts before using the area, especially when traveling on I-95 at night.

RIDOT said crews will continue curb, sidewalk and driveway replacement on Main Avenue, with weekday lane shifts between Greenwich Avenue and West Shore Road.

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation said temporary lane shifts will continue on Main Avenue in Warwick as crews replace curbs, sidewalks and driveways as part of the active Warwick Corridor Project.

The work area on Main Avenue runs from Greenwich Avenue to West Shore Road. RIDOT’s July 24, 2026 project update said work was scheduled on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., when motorists and people traveling along the corridor may encounter changed traffic patterns and work affecting the roadside pedestrian infrastructure.

Main Avenue work remains in construction phase

The update describes scheduled construction activity, not completed work. Crews are continuing replacement of curbs, sidewalks and driveways on the Main Avenue segment, while temporary lane shifts are required during the work.

RIDOT identified Main Avenue between Greenwich Avenue and West Shore Road as the specific Warwick segment subject to the lane-shift arrangement. The advisory does not say that lane shifts apply to all roads in Warwick or to the full I-95 corridor.

For people using this stretch of Main Avenue, the immediate effect is a weekday work zone from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. The corridor work combines vehicle traffic management with replacement of pedestrian-facing features including sidewalks and curbs.

I-95 South configuration tied to interchange work

RIDOT also planned a traffic shift on I-95 South at the Route 4 interchange. The configuration is intended to create a median work zone for drainage improvements and construction of the northern pier for a new flyover bridge.

That I-95 South traffic configuration was expected to remain through the following summer, or summer 2027, according to RIDOT’s travel advisory. The interchange work affects the Route 4/I-95 area serving Warwick and East Greenwich.

The Main Avenue work and interchange work are both components of the Warwick Corridor Project, but the agency’s notices describe distinct locations and traffic arrangements. The Main Avenue notice covers the local roadway segment between Greenwich Avenue and West Shore Road; the interstate notice concerns I-95 South at Route 4.

What remains unknown

RIDOT’s materials establish the scheduled construction activities and expected duration of the I-95 traffic configuration, but they do not provide a final cost for the full corridor project, identify funding sources, or give an exact completion date for the overall project.

Summer 2027 is therefore the expected end point for the stated I-95 traffic configuration, not a confirmed completion date for all Warwick Corridor Project work. RIDOT remains the agency responsible for the project updates and travel advisory.

New London drivers face scheduled Aug. 11–15 night closures at Exit 83 and South Frontage Road as northbound bridge traffic shifts into Stage 1.

New London drivers should expect another scheduled change around the Gold Star Bridge in August. The city says the I-95 northbound Exit 83 ramp and South Frontage Road are scheduled to close nightly from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. from Tuesday, August 11, through Saturday, August 15, 2026.

The closures are tied to girder installation for the ongoing bridge project. The city says marked detours and signs will guide motorists around the work zone, while weather or other unforeseen conditions could modify the schedule. Drivers using the affected locations should check the city’s Gold Star Bridge updates and CTDOT’s current road advisories before traveling during the closure window.

Northbound traffic is entering another project phase

The August work follows the I-95 northbound crossover that was implemented in late May. The city’s June 26 update said the project would move northbound local traffic into its permanent Stage 1 alignment during August.

In that planned configuration, the two local-traffic lanes will be repositioned toward the center of the Gold Star Bridge rather than remaining toward the right side of the bridge. Barriers will be installed along the northbound local lanes, creating a more confined travel corridor with limited shoulders. The city said that condition was expected to be fully in place by the end of August.

The Stage 1 alignment is a scheduled project milestone, not a claim that every construction step has been completed. The Gold Star Bridge work is part of CTDOT’s projects affecting the I-95 connection between New London and Groton. Drivers should follow the lane markings and signs in place when they travel, particularly if their usual route depends on the Exit 83 area or local access near the bridge.

Route 1 work was a separate project

CTDOT also issued a separate notice for milling and resurfacing on Route 1. The project covered 1.55 miles from Route 156, or Rope Ferry Road, in Waterford to Service Route 641, or Jefferson Avenue, in New London.

CTDOT’s weather-adjusted notice scheduled the resurfacing portion from the evening of July 12 through Friday morning, July 24, with nighttime lane closures from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. As of August 1, that published work window had passed; readers should use current CTDOT information to confirm whether any extension or follow-up work was announced.

The Route 1 project should not be treated as part of the Gold Star Bridge work. It is relevant to trips approaching New London from Waterford, especially near the Jefferson Avenue endpoint. The practical effects of the two projects may include changing lane positions, nighttime ramp closures, detours or extra travel time, but the available notices do not document specific delay amounts.

What commuters should watch

During the scheduled August 11–15 closure window, drivers using the northbound Exit 83 ramp or South Frontage Road should allow flexibility and follow posted detour signs. Emergency-service agencies have also been preparing backup routing options as bridge construction continues, but that planning does not establish that service disruptions have occurred.

Because construction schedules can change, check the City of New London’s Gold Star Bridge page and CTDOT’s construction-advisory system before an overnight trip. CTDOT directs motorists to CTroads.org for current road closures, construction and lane-closure information.

VDOT says all I-95 southbound lanes reopened at mile marker 146 and the Exit 148 detour was lifted, but delays may persist on I-95 and Route 1.

VDOT’s July 10, 2026 update posted at 9:05 a.m. says all Interstate 95 southbound lanes reopened at mile marker 146 in Stafford County and the Exit 148 (Quantico) detour was lifted after an earlier vehicle crash was cleared.

Even so, the agency warns drivers to expect residual delays on I-95 southbound approaching Exit 148 and on Route 1 southbound between Russell Road in the Quantico area and Route 610 (Garrisonville Road) in Stafford.

Where the crash shut down lanes

VDOT said a multi-vehicle crash just south of Exit 148 (near the Prince William County–Stafford County line) closed all lanes at mile marker 146.

Detour guidance VDOT used at Exit 148 (Quantico)

During the closure, VDOT directed all southbound drivers to detour at Exit 148 (Quantico) to Route 1 southbound (ahead of the crash area).

VDOT also noted that motorists could re-enter I-95 southbound at Exit 143 (Aquia/Garrisonville) in Stafford, and that traffic signals along Route 1 were retimed to accommodate the shifted traffic flow.

With today’s 9:05 a.m. update, VDOT says that detour is now lifted—but it is still warning about lingering congestion in the same approach corridors.

What to do if you commute southbound

Add buffer time if you’re heading south on I-95 toward Exit 148.

Expect slowdowns on Route 1 from Russell Road (Quantico area) to Route 610 (Garrisonville Road).

Re-check before you leave by viewing VDOT updates through 511Virginia, since incident conditions can change.
