USDOT Secretary Sean P. Duffy launched the competition. The department also identified Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology Seval Oz in connection with the initiative. Timeline for applicants and finalists

The immediate deadline for applicants is Aug. 10, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. ET. That date is the next concrete step for transportation innovators deciding whether to submit a concept.

USDOT expects to identify Stage I finalists in fall 2026. The competition’s final winner is scheduled for fall 2027. The announcement does not state how many finalists will advance or provide a specific date for either the fall 2026 announcement or the final result in fall 2027.

The timeline means the competition will remain in an evaluation and selection phase well after the August submission deadline. It does not establish that operational transportation technology will be deployed by the time a winner is selected.

Why the competition matters
