The decline, measured in revenue passenger kilometers, came with a 1.3% reduction in available capacity. The global passenger load factor—the share of available seats filled—was 84.2%, down 0.4 percentage points from June 2025.

IATA said the figures are provisional and include estimates for missing data, so the results may be revised.

Domestic markets led the decline

Domestic demand fell 3.0% year over year, while domestic capacity dropped 2.4%. The domestic load factor was 84.0%.

The largest national-market declines reported by IATA were in China, where domestic demand fell 5.2%, and Japan, where it fell 3.8%. Domestic demand in the United States declined 1.2%.

The figures show that the June contraction was not uniform across the industry. Latin American carrier demand increased 3.5%, while African carrier demand rose 6.7%. North American carrier demand, by contrast, fell 1.0%.

International demand declined 0.9% overall. Excluding the Middle East, however, international demand increased 1.1%, indicating that disruption in that region had a significant effect on the worldwide international comparison.

Middle East disruption weighed on results

Middle Eastern carriers recorded a 14% year-over-year decline in demand and an 11% decline in capacity. Their load factor was 76.3%, well below the global figure.

IATA has also linked difficult airline operating conditions in 2026 to Middle East disruption and higher fuel prices. In a June industry outlook, the association forecast $1.165 trillion in airline revenue and 5.1 billion passengers for 2026. It projected industry profits of $23 billion, down from $45 billion in 2025.

Those industry forecasts are separate from the June traffic results. The monthly data show how much passengers traveled and how much capacity airlines offered; they do not establish a single cause for every market’s performance or measure the effect of any one factor on fares.

Europe-Asia traffic remained a bright spot

Among major international route corridors, Europe-Asia traffic posted the fastest growth, rising 11.0% from a year earlier. That increase stood out against the overall international decline and the weaker results for Middle East carriers.

The split between route corridors and domestic markets gives airlines, airports and travelers a mixed picture. International travel between Europe and Asia expanded sharply, while several large domestic markets contracted. Capacity reductions also accompanied the overall decline, but the global load factor remained above 84%.

IATA’s preceding monthly analysis had already documented a contraction in passenger traffic in May 2026. The June release therefore extends a short-term weakening trend rather than reporting an isolated monthly slowdown, although the provisional figures could change.

The next step is revision of the June estimates as additional airline data become available. Until then, the headline result is a broad but uneven pullback: domestic demand weakened most sharply, international traffic was nearly flat after the Middle East effect, and Europe-Asia travel continued to grow.

The figures show that the effects of the Middle East conflict reached beyond individual route cancellations. They also influenced the wider pattern of passenger demand and recovery across domestic and international markets. But IATA’s release does not establish that the conflict alone caused the global decline.

A weaker June for global and domestic demand

IATA’s June comparison measures passenger demand against June 2025. Global demand was down 1.7% year over year, and domestic demand was down 3.0%. The figures are industry data reported by IATA and are preliminary, meaning they may be revised.

The domestic result was weaker than the overall global result, although the approved data do not provide a regional breakdown of the 3.0% decline. They also do not show how the June figures translated into airline revenue, profitability, ticket prices or the performance of individual routes.

That distinction matters for passengers and airlines. Passenger demand is a measure of travel activity; it is not the same as the financial results of carriers or the experience on every route. The June data describe an overall market movement rather than a uniform result for every country, airline or airport.

The Middle East shock and the recovery that followed

IATA linked the June results partly to the normalization of airline operations in the Middle East. It also pointed to comparison effects from military strikes in June 2025, which affected the year-earlier base used for the comparison.

Earlier IATA data provide a measure of how sharply travel interest to the region changed after the escalation of the Iran conflict on Feb. 28. Bookings to the Middle East fell 63% in March, according to IATA’s July 3 analysis.

Forward bookings to the region remained below the prior year in May, but they had been recovering from the March shock. That recovery does not mean all Middle East routes returned at the same pace. A mixed global booking picture

IATA said the broader global booking picture was mixed. Asia-Pacific, Europe and North America were showing different trajectories, indicating that the June result was not a single uniform pattern across major aviation markets.
