A title after recent major-event losses

The U.S. reached the final by edging Japan 50-49 in the semifinal. Japan, the reigning Paralympic champion, later defeated Great Britain 54-47 to win the bronze medal.

That path makes the São Paulo result especially significant. Team USA beat both Japan and Australia in the knockout stage, overcoming the two opponents most directly connected to its recent losses at major international events.

The 2026 championship featured 12 teams and was the first Wheelchair Rugby World Championship held in South America. The final standings placed the United States, Australia, Japan and Great Britain in the top four.

The International Paralympic Committee published its championship account on August 27, four days after the final. USA Wheelchair Rugby and Wheelchair Rugby Australia also recorded the 57-51 result, while NBC Sports independently reported the U.S. victory and its recent Paralympic context.

The win ends a 16-year gap between U.S. wheelchair rugby world titles. It also provides a stronger current form indicator for the program than its silver-medal finish at the Paris Games alone.

Why LA28 is the next reference point

The Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games are scheduled for August 15-27, 2028. The world championship does not, by itself, establish Paralympic qualification or guarantee that any individual athlete will be selected for the U.S. roster.

Instead, the title sets a competitive standard for the program as it prepares for a home Paralympics. The next developments to watch include U.S. roster decisions, sanctioned qualification events and the national team’s preparation schedule.

International Paralympic Committee coverage identified Chuck Aoki and Sarah Adam as the U.S. team’s co-captains during the championship. Their leadership in São Paulo does not determine future roster places for either player or any other athlete.

Para Powerlifting is scheduled for August 24-27, 2028, during the second week of the Games. The announcement also confirms that Peacock Theater will host goalball from August 13-21, creating a shared venue schedule for two Paralympic sports.

One venue, two Paralympic competitions

LA28 said the scheduling shift with goalball will allow competition to begin on August 13, two days before the August 15 Paralympic Opening Ceremony, without eliminating athletes before the Games officially begin. The International Paralympic Committee published the same venue and scheduling details on July 24.

Goalball is scheduled to use Peacock Theater through August 21. Para Powerlifting is then scheduled for August 24 through August 27. Both sports are assigned to the downtown Los Angeles zone, although the official Games schedule remains subject to change.

The 2028 Paralympic Games are scheduled for August 15-27, 2028. LA28’s competition schedule, labeled Version 3.1 and dated June 9, 2026, states that event dates and other schedule details may change until the Games conclude.

June announcements filled in more of the venue map

The July confirmation follows a June 9 LA28 update covering several other Paralympic operations.

Para Cycling Road events are scheduled to start and finish at the Los Angeles Zoo from August 22-26, 2028. LA28 also confirmed that the Paralympic marathon will start at Venice Beach Boardwalk and finish in front of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on August 27.

Those announcements identify the event endpoints, but they do not release the complete road-event courses. LA28 said the remaining full course details for Para Cycling Road and the Paralympic marathon were expected later in 2026.

The planned Main Press Center will be at the NFL headquarters at Hollywood Park in Inglewood. LA28 said the site will serve as a central media hub for coverage of the 2028 Paralympic Games.

What the update means for planning

For U.S. athletes and national delegations, the confirmed venue and competition windows provide more information for long-range preparation and Games-time coordination. Broadcasters and other media organizations also have a clearer picture of the competition and press locations, including the planned operation at Hollywood Park.

For spectators and travelers, the announcements are useful but incomplete. They establish several venues and dates, but they do not provide every road-event detail or all final Games-time instructions. Ticketing, transportation, accessibility and other operational information should be based on later official releases rather than inferred from the venue announcements.

What to watch next

LA28 is expected to release additional operational information later in 2026, including the full courses for the Paralympic marathon and Para Cycling Road. Organizers are also expected to provide further information before athletes, delegations, broadcasters and spectators finalize Games-time plans.

For now, the main change is a confirmed downtown Los Angeles venue for Para Powerlifting, alongside a revised shared schedule that places goalball at Peacock Theater earlier in the Paralympic program.

The team’s term runs from September 8, 2026, through August 31, 2027. It is a national development designation for junior swimmers — not the 2028 U.S. Olympic team and not a guarantee of Olympic qualification.

Who can qualify

Swimmers must be 18 or younger as of December 31, 2026. The age test is therefore based on the end of the calendar year, not the swimmer’s age on the day of a particular race.

Athletes also must be registered USA Swimming members in good standing when they compete, when they are selected and throughout their National Junior Team term. They must be eligible to represent the United States in international competition.

Swimmers selected to USA Swimming’s 2026-27 National Team cannot also be selected to the National Junior Team. The selection document also includes continuing membership, SafeSport, anti-doping and other eligibility obligations during the team term.

Which performances count

Selection is based on each swimmer’s fastest long-course-meter time in each eligible individual event on the 2028 Olympic swimming program, excluding the 50-meter backstroke, 50-meter breaststroke and 50-meter butterfly. The performance must come from either a USA Swimming-sanctioned competition or an AQUA-approved competition held between December 1, 2025, and August 20, 2026.

Only one time per swimmer, per event, is used. The procedures allow times from preliminary heats, semifinals and finals, including A, B, C and D finals.

Several types of swims are excluded. Relay leadoffs, time trials, swim-offs and intermediate splits do not count. Times from USA Swimming “approved meets” and observed swims also are excluded.

How many swimmers are selected

USA Swimming will select six athletes per competition category in the 100-meter freestyle and six per competition category in the 200-meter freestyle.

In each of the remaining eligible individual Olympic events, five athletes per competition category will be selected. The three excluded 50-meter stroke events will have no National Junior Team selections under these procedures.

If swimmers are tied for the final position in an event, all athletes involved in the tie will be selected.

The dates families need to track

August 20, 2026: The performance window closes. A qualifying swim must take place by this date.

August 25, 2026, at 8 a.m. Mountain Time: USA Swimming will use the times database as it exists at that point to make the selections.

August 30, 2026: If an eligible performance is missing from the database, the athlete must contact USA Swimming and provide proof before this deadline. The responsibility for raising the missing result rests with the athlete.

September 8, 2026: USA Swimming says the team will be announced by this date. That is an announced-by date, not a guaranteed release time.

Why the designation matters

USA Swimming describes its American Development Model as a long-term athlete-development framework. The National Junior Team fits within that structure by identifying high-performing junior athletes for a national development program.

That role is separate from Olympic selection. A National Junior Team spot does not reserve a place on the U.S. team for the Los Angeles 2028 Games. Olympic qualification and team selection will be determined through separate procedures.

For families and coaches, the immediate checklist is practical: confirm that the meet is eligible, verify that the result was swum in long-course meters, keep USA Swimming membership current and review the times database before the August 25 snapshot. If the eligible time is missing, the athlete must use the proof process by August 30.

The next developments to watch are the end of the performance window, database corrections, any ties for final selection positions, eligibility checks and USA Swimming’s official roster announcement.

The 2026 IFAF World Flag Football Championships run through Aug. 16. The United States does not need to qualify in Düsseldorf: under the approved LA28 system, the host nation already has one men’s and one women’s berth.

But the tournament will determine four other Olympic qualifiers. The top two men’s teams and top two women’s teams in Düsseldorf, excluding the United States, will earn direct places in Los Angeles.

What happens in Düsseldorf

The field includes 16 men’s national teams and 16 women’s national teams. All 16 women’s teams are scheduled to play on the opening day, Aug. 13, at the Düsseldorf Flag Football Complex.

The U.S. women are scheduled to open against Australia on Field 1. IFAF’s schedule also lists Nigeria as another U.S. opponent on opening day. The U.S. men are scheduled to open against Israel before facing other teams in their group, including Australia and American Samoa.

Group play continues Aug. 14, followed by knockout and placement games Aug. 15. The final day, Aug. 16, is scheduled to settle the world championships and the four direct LA28 qualification places available through the tournament.

How the LA28 qualification system works

Los Angeles 2028 will feature six women’s teams and six men’s teams in flag football. The United States has the automatic host-nation place in each event.

Düsseldorf awards two additional places in each event. Those places go to the highest-finishing teams that have not already qualified, meaning U.S. results will not take away one of the four available direct berths.

The remaining Olympic route continues through the 2027 IFAF Continental Championships. Those championships will send eligible teams into a final qualification event connected to the Olympic Qualifier Series in 2028. The Q-Series is scheduled to award the last three women’s and three men’s places.

That distinction matters for American fans: Team USA’s Olympic presence is already secured, while most of the international field still has to navigate a qualification race that begins in Düsseldorf.

Team USA’s roster and preparation

USA Football is the U.S. national governing body for American football and the country’s sole member of the International Federation of American Football. It selects, trains and leads Team USA for international competition, including the 2028 Olympics.

USA Football has published the 2026 U.S. women’s national-team roster, including the coaching staff and athlete positions. The organization’s earlier 2026 roster announcement described an initial 24-athlete pool and a subsequent selection process leading to final teams for the world championship.

The U.S. women enter as defending IFAF world champions. IFAF said the team was displaced from the top spot in its world rankings after losing to Mexico in the final of The World Games. The Aug. 13 matchup with Australia will be the first scheduled test in Düsseldorf.

What to watch next

The first checkpoint is Aug. 13, when the U.S. women face Australia and the 16-team women’s field begins group play. The decisive day is Aug. 16, when the world titles and the first four non-host Olympic berths are scheduled to be settled.

For Team USA, the stakes are different from those facing most of the field. The American men’s and women’s teams are already headed to LA28. Düsseldorf will instead show how the U.S. teams measure up against the international field and which countries will join them in Los Angeles.

Flag football is set to make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, giving the Düsseldorf tournament significance beyond its world championship titles: it is the first major event in the sport’s Olympic qualification pathway.
