The agency says the 2026 continuation grants could support opportunities involving up to 430,000 Americans. That is a projected program reach based on targets reported by recipients—not a confirmed count of people who have already volunteered, registered or completed service.

Three grant categories

The awards cover three areas: the Volunteer Generation Fund, the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service and the September 11th Day of Service and Remembrance.

Recipients include state service commissions, nonprofit organizations, local governments and national groups across multiple states and the District of Columbia. The award list includes organizations and public agencies in Maine, Florida, California, Massachusetts, Michigan, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Texas, Louisiana, Tennessee, North Carolina, Washington, Virginia, Ohio and other jurisdictions.

Individual awards and projected engagement figures vary widely. AmeriCorps lists a $2 million Volunteer Generation Fund award to Love Has No Limits in California with a projected 100,000 volunteer engagements. Michigan’s Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity is listed for a $500,000 Volunteer Generation Fund award with a projected 100,250 engagements.

Those numbers are targets attached to the awards. They should not be read as proof that those people have already participated or that every projected opportunity will occur. Later reporting will need to distinguish planned engagement from actual participation.

Funding is aimed at volunteer capacity

The Volunteer Generation Fund is not limited to paying for one-time events. AmeriCorps says it supports volunteer-management practices that help organizations recruit and retain people to address critical community needs.

That can include improving recruitment, orientation and training; matching people with appropriate roles; developing volunteer-management systems; and strengthening supervision and support. The 2026 funding opportunity is limited to state service commissions, which may carry out activities directly or support community organizations through subgrants.

The Days of Service awards are more directly tied to projects connected with Martin Luther King Jr. Day and September 11. Those grants can support outreach, planning and service activities while helping organizations build participation beyond a single day.

Why September 11 matters this year

Organizations are preparing for the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance on Friday, September 11, 2026, the 25th anniversary of the attacks. The day is intended to honor those killed and injured on September 11, 2001, first responders and others who served in the aftermath by directing remembrance toward community service.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day projects are separate. The holiday will be observed on Monday, January 18, 2027, the third Monday of January. The two grant areas share an emphasis on service, but they involve different dates and programs.

The federal announcement also comes amid separate national efforts to improve volunteer recruitment and participation. The Associated Press has reported on a Points of Light strategy focused on expanding volunteerism. That initiative is independent of the AmeriCorps awards and should not be treated as part of the grant program.

How to find a project

Residents can start with AmeriCorps’ volunteer resources or search the 9/11 Day project directory by city, state or ZIP code. The directory says new listings are being added over time, so people who find few nearby options may want to check again closer to September 11.

Current listings include food-distribution work, disaster-preparedness kit assembly, park and cemetery cleanup, landscaping, youth activities and other community projects. Availability, age rules, registration deadlines, transportation needs and physical requirements vary by listing.

Before signing up, check whether the project requires outdoor work, lifting, cleanup, standing for extended periods, a waiver or an adult guardian for participants under 18. The federal awards go to selected organizations and state commissions, so not every community will receive a project and no particular local event is guaranteed.

What to watch next

The more meaningful measures will come later: how many people register, how many actually participate, what projects are completed and whether organizations retain volunteers for future work. Those results will provide a clearer picture than the current projected reach of up to 430,000 Americans.
