According to the city notice, Llewellyn Avenue is closed in both directions from Shirley Avenue to 20th Street, Shirley Avenue is closed from Llewellyn Avenue to DeBree Avenue, and DeBree Avenue is closed from Shirley Avenue to Washington Park. Detours are posted via Princess Anne Road, 21st Street, Colonial Avenue and Granby Street.

That means slower trips for commuters, school families, nearby residents and businesses that use the streets around Maury. Anyone who regularly drives through the area should build in extra time and be ready to reroute around the work zone.

Part of the larger Maury rebuild

Norfolk Public Schools describes the closures as part of the new Maury High School project, a multi-year rebuild at the 20th Street and Llewellyn Avenue site. A May 2026 project newsletter shows construction is active now, with site work and related paving activity still underway.

The city says the disruption is expected to continue until mid-to-late August. Until then, drivers should watch for updates and assume access around the school site can change as construction moves ahead.
