The City of Philadelphia released the figures July 7 as part of a retrospective on the Independence Day and World Cup period. The account also documented large crowds at historic institutions, three consecutive days of temperatures at or above 101 degrees, and a severe thunderstorm that temporarily halted the One Philly: Unity Concert.

The numbers show the scale of the public events Philadelphia managed during a concentrated holiday and sports period. They do not, by themselves, establish a net economic gain or provide a full economic-impact estimate.

World Cup attendance

The city said five of its six World Cup matches sold out. The opening match finished 50 tickets short of capacity.

The largest reported crowd came July 4, when 68,324 people attended the Round of 16 match between France and Paraguay. Across all six matches, the reported attendance reached 409,894.

Philadelphia’s official account identified fans from more than 190 countries, underscoring the international audience attached to the matches at Philadelphia Stadium. The release did not provide an independently audited attendance methodology, and the reported visitor totals should not be read as a count of unique individuals across every event.

Holiday crowds extended beyond the stadium

Attendance was also reported at several Independence Week attractions. The National Constitution Center said it welcomed more than 12,000 visitors during Independence Week.

The Museum of the American Revolution reported nearly 8,000 visitors over the holiday weekend, describing that total as its highest three-day attendance. Carpenters’ Hall reported nearly 7,500 visitors from July 2 through July 5, including 3,000 on Independence Day.

Those institution-by-institution figures add detail to the city’s broader account, but they should not be combined into a single unique visitor count. People could have attended more than one venue or event.

Heat and storms added operational pressure

The city reported three consecutive days at or above 101 degrees during the period. It described the streak as Philadelphia’s first such run since records began in 1873. That is a record about the length of the streak, not a finding that the period was the city’s hottest ever.

The city also reported that a severe thunderstorm temporarily suspended the One Philly: Unity Concert before the event resumed. Together with the heat, the disruption illustrates the public-safety and event-management demands that accompanied the large crowds.

The official retrospective did not specify how many city workers, public-safety personnel or emergency resources were assigned to the events. It also did not give a complete economic-impact estimate.

A broader 2026 civic program

The World Cup and Independence Day activity came as Philadelphia was positioning Market East as a major 2026 civic and economic corridor. In a May 8 announcement, the city said it had secured a $938,460 Pennsylvania Main Street Matters grant for lighting improvements at the Reading Terminal Headhouse.

The city also said it had formed an advisory group of more than 60 civic, labor, business and development leaders. That earlier planning effort provides context for the later crowds, but the approved city materials do not quantify whether the events produced lasting changes in business activity, tourism or neighborhood conditions.

For now, the July 7 release is an official post-event accounting of attendance and operating conditions. No additional deadline or next city action was identified in the approved materials.
