The schedule calls for reports three days, two days and one day before kickoff, followed by a final report two hours before the game. The first reports under the new process are due before the September 19 conference games between USC and Rutgers and Purdue and UCLA.

The change gives fans, teams, sportsbooks and competition-integrity monitors a fixed schedule for tracking whether key players are expected to be available. It also comes as the NCAA and major conferences address sports-betting pressure, solicitations and harassment tied to player status.

How the four-report schedule works

For a Saturday conference game, the three midweek reports are due by 8 p.m. Eastern, 7 p.m. Central or 5 p.m. Pacific on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. A final game-day report is due two hours before kickoff.

The Big Ten says all reports will be published on Bigten. Fans will therefore have a standardized place to check updates several times during the week instead of relying only on team announcements or pregame information.

What the status labels mean

Midweek reports may list players as Probable, Questionable, Doubtful, Out or Out (1st Half).

On game day, the available categories will be Game Time Decision, Out and Out (1st Half). Players who are not listed on a report will be considered Available under the conference process.

The labels describe playing availability, not necessarily an injury diagnosis. The Big Ten announcement does not require schools to publicly identify why a player is unavailable or listed with a particular designation.

Which players must be listed

The process is not a public roster of every player on a team. Because of travel-party limitations, visiting teams must report the status of players who were part of the travel squad, as well as players outside that group who are or have been listed on the offensive, defensive or special-teams two-deep or who regularly participate in games.

That limitation focuses the reports on players most likely to affect the competition. It also means a player not appearing on a report is treated as available under the Big Ten’s process, rather than as a player whose status has been left unexplained.

Only conference games are covered

The policy applies to competition between Big Ten opponents. It does not apply to every game a Big Ten team plays during the 2026 season, including nonconference games.

The first reporting deadlines are tied to the September 19 games USC at Rutgers and Purdue at UCLA. Those are the first Big Ten conference-game deadlines under the new system, not the first games of the overall college football season.

Why availability reporting is expanding

The NCAA has separately introduced public availability reporting for the 2026 Division I men’s and women’s basketball championships. The association says those reports are intended to help reduce betting-related pressure, solicitations and harassment connected to student-athletes’ playing status.

That NCAA basketball program is a championship pilot, not a nationwide football rule. Other conferences have used availability-reporting systems, but the timing, categories and covered competitions differ by organization.

For Big Ten football fans, the practical change is a predictable public update schedule before conference games. The reports may improve transparency for people following teams and placing legal bets, but they do not guarantee that betting-related pressure or harassment will disappear. They also provide a status designation, not necessarily the medical or personal reason behind it.
