<p>Federal electricity data provide additional context for the decision. The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported that net electricity generation in the United States increased 3.1% in May 2026 compared with May 2025.</p>
<p>The increase does not show that the emergency order caused higher national generation. Rather, it reflects the broader demand and supply conditions that are putting continuing pressure on the reliability of the electric system.</p>
<p>For households and businesses, grid reliability is most visible when power remains available during periods when air-conditioning and other electricity use are high. An emergency dispatch order can give a regional operator more options to maintain service, but it does not eliminate the possibility of outages or resolve longer-term questions about generation, transmission and reserve capacity.</p>

<p>DOE also issued an emergency order on July 14 directing the PJM Interconnection to use specified generating units and backup resources during reliability stress. That order expired July 21.</p>

<h2>Why the orders matter</h2>

<p>The orders do not establish that a blackout occurred, and they are not proof of a nationwide grid failure. They do show the federal government intervening repeatedly to keep additional generation available while regional systems face summer reliability concerns.</p>

<p>For households and businesses, the underlying question is whether the grid can maintain enough dependable capacity as electricity demand rises. The source packet identifies heat, electrification and large data centers as pressures on the system. Emergency orders can make additional resources available during a period of stress, but they do not by themselves resolve longer-term limits in generation or transmission.</p>

<p>DOE opened a 60-day public-comment period. The review could help shape how federal officials and other participants assess where the nation needs additional transmission capacity and which constraints may limit the movement of electricity between regions.</p>

<p>The study’s timing places the emergency orders in a broader policy context. The July actions addressed immediate reliability concerns in specific regional systems, while the draft study examines infrastructure needs that can take much longer to plan, permit and build.</p>

<h2>Federal funding is another next step</h2>

<p>DOE announced a $1.9 billion SPARK opportunity for critical grid infrastructure and advanced transmission technologies, including reconductoring. The department said the program is intended to expand capacity and improve reliability, with project selections expected in August 2026.</p>

<p>The available announcement does not confirm that those selections had been made by Aug. 7. The funding opportunity therefore remains a proposed path toward grid modernization rather than a completed set of projects.</p>

<h2>Demand is still rising</h2>

<p>Data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration showed that U.S. net electricity generation increased 3.1% in May 2026 compared with May 2025. EIA also reported that Texas’ daily peak demand was near the top of its preceding 12-month range.</p>

<p>Those figures provide national and regional context for the July orders. Higher generation and elevated peak demand do not mean that every region faces the same conditions, but they underscore why operators focus on maintaining reserves during hot weather.</p>

<p>The immediate July orders have expired. The next known federal milestones are the close of the draft transmission study’s 60-day comment period and DOE’s expected August window for SPARK project selections. The available information does not establish whether DOE issued a replacement order after the SPP directive expired on Aug. 3.</p>

<p>The orders do not approve faster connections for every data center. They also do not guarantee that new generation or transmission projects will be built. Instead, they begin regulatory proceedings in which the operators must defend their existing approaches or submit reforms. <h2>Why large-load connections are under review</h2>

<p>AI data centers and other major facilities can require substantial amounts of electricity and may seek service on schedules that challenge established grid-planning processes. Faster connections can help projects obtain power sooner, but changes to those processes can also raise questions about reliability, upgrade costs and whether existing ratepayers bear expenses associated with new demand.</p>

<p>FERC said its action is designed to address those competing concerns. <p>The proceedings follow a rare Level 3 alert issued by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation in May 2026. The alert addressed unexpected data-center load losses and oscillating demand that created reliability concerns.</p>
