What’s closing — and when

DNR’s J.E. Roush Lake Fish & Wildlife Area alerts say the Kil-So-Quah Recreation Area campground will close indefinitely on June 29, 2026 at 2 p.m. ET. DNR says the decision follows an evaluation that included public safety considerations and maintenance needs.

What stays open at J.E. Roush Lake

Even after the campground shuts down, DNR says the remainder of J.E. Roush Lake Fish & Wildlife Area remains open and is “ready to welcome visitors.”

DNR’s property map shows Kil-So-Quah as the recreation area that includes the boat ramp area and the campground entrance within the larger J.E. Roush Lake FWA footprint.

Where DNR points campers to go instead

DNR says campers can continue at nearby Indiana DNR properties, including:

• Salamonie Lake
• Mississinewa Lake
• Ouabache State Park
• Chain O’Lakes State Park

The short film focuses on the Cardinal Valley Habitat Restoration Project and the mine-reclamation and compost work behind it. KRPS says the documentary shows how Webb City used compost to restore prairie on land damaged by mining, while a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service restoration plan describes a broader effort to rebuild prairie and wetland habitat on remediated mine land near Webb City.

The screening is set for 6:30 p.m. at 24 S. Main Street and will be followed by a Q&A and a reception. Tickets are listed at $10. A guided walk through Cardinal Valley is scheduled before the premiere, and the reception is planned across the street at Somewhere in Time Bookshop.

The Webb City Sentinel preview says the project has involved the city, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
