Roxbury MA - Boston says Lower Roxbury Slow Streets has entered construction, starting drainage work at Tremont & Northampton and Hammond & Shawmut.

Roxbury residents driving, walking, or parking in Lower Roxbury will start seeing construction activity as the City of Boston moves the Lower Roxbury Slow Streets project into its construction phase. Boston Transportation’s latest project update says construction has begun and is targeting 2026 completion.

What’s starting now

In the city’s June 2026 construction update, Boston Transportation points to early work focused on stormwater and drainage improvements—part of the preparatory steps for redesigning intersections in the neighborhood.

Tremont Street at Northampton Street: Boston says it has started moving and replacing stormwater basins at Tremont and Northampton to prepare for redesigning the intersection. The city adds that drainage improvements here were expected to finish through mid-June.

Hammond Street at Shawmut Avenue: Boston says it began setting up on Monday, May 8, to start drainage improvements in preparation for the redesign. The city also flags that there may be some parking impacts in the area to support safe travel for vehicles and contractors.

Why residents should pay attention

Slow Streets projects are meant to make neighborhood intersections safer and more accessible, while also calming traffic. In this phase, the work is largely about the infrastructure beneath the roadway—especially drainage—before later construction and safety upgrades at the intersections move forward.

For residents and anyone who uses these corners regularly, Boston’s update is the key practical guidance: watch for posted signage near the active areas, and plan for possible short-term access and parking changes where work crews are staging equipment or moving materials.

Community meeting held June 23

As part of the outreach around construction impacts, the city hosted a Construction Info Meeting on June 23, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Peoples Baptist, 830 Tremont Street in Roxbury.

While that meeting date has now passed, Boston is using the project page to keep residents informed during construction.

How to get updates or ask questions

Boston Transportation says to monitor the project’s updates directly on the Lower Roxbury Slow Streets page. The city also lists a staff contact for questions: Hannah Fong, at slow.streets@boston.gov.
