The Transportation Department’s inaugural competition seeks concepts involving autonomous vehicles, delivery drones, aviation and rail technologies, with Stage I finalists expected this fall.

The U.S. Department of Transportation has opened its inaugural Robotics in Transportation competition and set a 5 p.m. Eastern deadline on Aug. 10, 2026, for concept-paper submissions.

The national program is intended to identify and promote robotics applications across transportation, including autonomous vehicles, delivery drones, supersonic flight and rail technologies. For companies, researchers and other transportation innovators, the deadline creates a concrete federal entry point for presenting ideas involving emerging mobility systems.

What applicants must do

Applicants must complete the department’s intake form, prepare a submission package and email the materials to DOT. The department said a webinar explaining the competition was scheduled for July 8, 2026.

The competition was launched in July 2026 by Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy. DOT’s announcement describes the program as covering a broad range of robotics and transportation uses rather than a single vehicle type or operating environment.

That scope includes road transportation through autonomous vehicles, air transportation through delivery drones and supersonic-flight concepts, and rail applications. The competition therefore reaches beyond passenger cars and could be relevant to innovators working on freight, delivery, infrastructure and other transportation systems.

Timeline for the competition

DOT expects to announce Stage I finalists in fall 2026. The department expects the Stage II winner to be announced in fall 2027.

As of Aug. 8, 2026, no finalist list or winner had been announced. The immediate action for potential applicants is the concept-paper submission due Monday, Aug. 10, at 5 p.m. Eastern time.

The staged schedule means the Aug. 10 filing is an initial submission deadline, not the date when a transportation system will be approved or put into service. The packet does not identify a guaranteed federal award or promise that a participating concept will reach commercial deployment.

What the program does — and does not — mean

The competition is an innovation program, not a regulatory authorization for autonomous vehicles to operate commercially. Concepts submitted to DOT should not be described as approved or deployed transportation systems.

That distinction matters for people who encounter claims about automated transportation. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says vehicles currently sold in the United States still require driver attention. NHTSA also distinguishes available driver-assistance systems from future fully automated vehicles.

In practical terms, the competition may give transportation innovators a way to put ideas before the federal department and compete through a defined process. It does not by itself change what vehicles may legally do on public roads, establish that a technology is safe for commercial use or guarantee that a concept will receive funding.

A broader transportation-technology agenda

The robotics competition is part of a broader DOT focus on transportation technology. On July 22, 2026, the department announced a separate initiative using artificial intelligence to modernize transportation infrastructure.

That separate announcement provides context for the department’s technology agenda, but it is not the same program as the Robotics in Transportation competition. The competition’s next known milestone remains the Aug. 10 concept-paper deadline, followed by the expected Stage I finalist announcement in fall 2026.

For applicants, the near-term question is whether they can complete the intake form and submission package before the 5 p.m. Eastern cutoff. For the public, the next meaningful developments will be the finalists selected through Stage I and, later, the Stage II winner expected in fall 2027.
