Sallisaw Public Schools has placed a $23.6 million bond proposal before voters for the Aug. 25, 2026, election, with projects focused on fine arts, athletics and student safety.

Sallisaw voters will decide Aug. 25, 2026, whether to approve a $23.6 million bond package for Sallisaw Public Schools. The proposal would fund improvements centered on fine arts, athletics and student safety.

The bond question is scheduled for the Aug. 25 election. Voters, rather than school officials, will make the final decision on whether the package moves forward.

What the proposal would address

School officials have presented the package as a way to address needs in several parts of the district. Fine arts, athletic facilities and student safety are the main areas identified for the proposed improvements.

One project under consideration is a new track and field facility behind the middle school. Superintendent Steve Barrett identified that area as the intended location, but the final placement remains subject to engineering and architectural decisions.

As a result, the area behind the middle school is a proposed site rather than a finalized construction location. The proposal description also does not include a project-by-project cost breakdown for the full $23.6 million package.

What the proposal means for taxpayers

The district is presenting the bond package without an increase to its current property-tax rate. That is the proposal’s stated tax-rate position; it does not guarantee the election result or determine how an individual property-tax bill may change because of other factors.

If approved, the bonds would authorize funding for school improvements across the Sallisaw district, with potential effects for students, families, taxpayers and school facilities. If voters reject the package, the district would not receive voter authorization through the Aug. 25 election.

The vote also comes amid broader local discussion of athletic and recreation facilities. In an earlier announcement about a city aquatics facility, the City of Sallisaw described cooperation among Sallisaw Public Schools, TSET and the Cherokee Nation on local athletic and recreation projects. That cooperation provides context for the area’s continuing investment in community facilities, but it does not determine the outcome of the school bond question.

What happens next

The next scheduled step is the Aug. 25, 2026, election. Until voters cast their ballots, the $23.6 million package remains a proposal, and the track facility’s final location remains subject to design and engineering decisions.

The result will determine whether Sallisaw Public Schools receives authorization to pursue the proposed improvements in fine arts, athletics and student safety under the district’s stated current-property-tax-rate plan.
