What the proposal means for taxpayers

The district is presenting the bond package without an increase to its current property-tax rate. That is the proposal’s stated tax-rate position; it does not guarantee the election result or determine how an individual property-tax bill may change because of other factors.

If approved, the bonds would authorize funding for school improvements across the Sallisaw district, with potential effects for students, families, taxpayers and school facilities. If voters reject the package, the district would not receive voter authorization through the Aug. 25 election.

The vote also comes amid broader local discussion of athletic and recreation facilities. In an earlier announcement about a city aquatics facility, the City of Sallisaw described cooperation among Sallisaw Public Schools, TSET and the Cherokee Nation on local athletic and recreation projects. That cooperation provides context for the area’s continuing investment in community facilities, but it does not determine the outcome of the school bond question.
