Los Angeles CA — After June 25 knockdown, city and AQMD guidance still told Boyle Heights residents to limit smoke exposure; schools moved through June 24.

Los Angeles CA — Boyle Heights residents are still dealing with aftereffects from the June 17 cold-storage warehouse fire, even after firefighters reached knockdown.

Emergency declaration and smoke relief options

On June 20, Mayor Karen Bass issued a Declaration of Local Emergency to mobilize City resources for the warehouse fire response. The City said it would keep working to put out the fire completely and also support residents affected by smoke.

Mayor Bass’s office said a Smoke Relief Center was opened at Pecan Recreation Center (145 S Pecan St, Los Angeles) and was open 24 hours a day “until further notice.” The County also opened a Smoke Respite Center at City Terrace Park (1126 N Hazard Ave, Los Angeles).

Air-quality guidance: shelter-in-place lifted for one zone, smoke advisory continued

On June 23, Council District 14 updated its emergency information page at 2 p.m. It said “Shelter-in-place: Lifted for Zone LFD-1279-A,” but that a smoke advisory was still in effect.

The page directed residents to:

Limit outdoor exposure

Keep windows and doors closed

Use filtered air if available

South Coast AQMD particle advisory: “not a shelter-in-place order”

South Coast AQMD also extended a particle pollution advisory tied to the fire. The AQMD document states: “This is not a shelter-in-place order.”

That advisory was valid until Wednesday 12:30 PM and warned that smoke impacts could remain variable while firefighting continued, with ash possibly depositing.

AQMD’s “if you are in impacted area” steps included:

Limit exposure by remaining indoors with windows and doors closed (or seeking alternate shelter)

Avoid vigorous physical activity

Run air conditioning and/or an air purifier; if possible, avoid swamp coolers or whole-house fans that bring in outside air

School impacts: relocation window ran through June 24

Council District 14 said the nearby fire and changing air quality conditions led to LA Unified Region East school relocations to alternate schools through Wednesday, June 24, 2026.

Fire response transition: knockdown June 25, overhaul continued

In a June 23 media advisory, LAFD said operations inside the damaged building remained complex and that crews expected operations to continue as they extinguished remaining hot spots.

In its June 25 final update, LAFD reported that knockdown was declared at 5:58 PM on June 25, 2026. LAFD said that meant the fire was under control and moved toward overhaul, and that it would continue overhaul operations and progressively release resources as conditions permitted. LAFD also said responsibility for the property would be returned to the building owner and tenant on Friday, June 26, 2026.

Just as important for daily life: LAFD said an advisory remains in place for the area east of Boyle Heights and that people with sensitivity to smoke and/or nuisance odors should monitor AQMD Air Quality alerts and avoid unnecessary outdoor exposure.

What residents should monitor now

Re-check Council District 14 and LAFD updates for any changes to zone instructions

Use AQMD’s alerts for the latest particle/smoke guidance

If you have kids, asthma, heart or lung conditions, or smoke sensitivity, keep following the “limit exposure” steps (indoors with doors/windows closed and filtered air/air purification when available)

If you’re coordinating school or childcare, confirm current attendance/relocation instructions for the relevant school and district
