The project is expected to continue through November 2027. Fort Madison officials say the current cost is slightly more than $8 million, including more than $2.2 million in grant funding. A June 16 City Council record separately documented authorization for up to $8.5 million in sewer revenue capital loan notes tied to municipal sewer improvements.

What crews will build

The project is intended to separate Fort Madison’s combined stormwater and sanitary sewer system along 10th Street. Plans call for approximately 1,340 linear feet of new storm sewer and 3,618 linear feet of sanitary sewer.

Roads will be replaced as part of the project, and sidewalks will be replaced where needed. Crews may also address other underground utilities, including water lines, if replacement is necessary while streets are open.

The work extends from the Mississippi River area toward Denmark Hill. The city’s public information notice identified planned storm sewer, sanitary sewer and water-main improvements along 10th Street and Denmark Hill.

Why Fort Madison is doing the work

Fort Madison’s existing system carries stormwater and sanitary flows in the same network. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s environmental assessment says that during high-flow conditions, capacity limits can allow untreated combined flows to discharge toward the Mississippi River.

The project is intended to improve wastewater-system reliability and capacity while addressing combined sewer overflow events. EPA documents describe the work as part of a larger, phased effort in Fort Madison to separate the systems and improve long-term operation of the city’s wastewater collection system.

What residents and businesses should expect

Drivers, pedestrians, nearby residents and businesses should expect construction activity, closures, detours, sidewalk changes and possible utility-related interruptions as work moves through the corridor. The precise effect will vary by location and construction phase, so not every property should expect the same disruption.

The city has described the disruptions as an expected part of replacing underground infrastructure and rebuilding affected streets and sidewalks. Residents and businesses should watch Fort Madison’s official construction notices for changes to access, scheduling and specific closure information.

Construction has only begun, and the November 2027 completion date remains an expected timeline rather than a guaranteed final deadline.
