Spectrum News Bay News 9 reports that the approximately $25 million Denver Street project would upsize drainage pipes and add a stormwater pump station. The goal is to improve the system’s ability to move water away from streets and homes during heavy rainfall and recurring tidal, or “sunny-day,” flooding.

The project is expected to serve more than 350 homes, according to St. Petersburg Public Works Administrator Claude Tankersley. The new state appropriation is the second state allocation for the project; local reporting says the city has received $3 million in state appropriations across two fiscal years.

Part of a larger Shore Acres plan

Denver Street is one piece of a broader resilience strategy. The city is planning four new pump stations in Shore Acres. The Connecticut Avenue station is farther along in the process and was expected to move toward construction in 2026, while the Denver Street station is planned for a later phase. Potential additional locations include the Arizona Avenue area and the vicinity of the Shore Acres Recreation Center.

WMNF reported that the four Shore Acres stations together could represent roughly $100 million in infrastructure investment. The broader Shore Acres plan is separate from the approximately $25 million Denver Street project, which has received $3 million in state appropriations across two fiscal years.

What residents should watch next

The next practical milestones are completion of design, confirmation of the remaining project funding, a construction schedule and any changes to traffic or access around Denver Street. The city has described the work as part of its St. Pete Agile Resilience initiative, which is intended to advance priority stormwater projects.

Residents should also keep the project’s limits in mind. The larger pipes and pump station are designed for rainfall and tidal flooding. They are not intended to stop major hurricane storm surge. Bay News 9 reported that Hurricane Helene’s 2024 surge flooded much of Shore Acres, and city officials said a pump station cannot handle water overtopping seawalls during a major surge event.

For now, the grant is best understood as state support for planned infrastructure—not a completed project or an immediate end to flooding. The key questions for Shore Acres residents are when design will finish, how the full cost will be covered and when construction will begin.
