Cook County announced the 2025 Resident Storm Relief Project on July 20, 2026. The program will be funded through the county’s Disaster Response and Recovery Fund and may provide up to $2,000 per eligible household. That amount is a maximum potential payment, not a guarantee. The county has not yet explained how final awards will be calculated or whether payments will vary based on damage, need or other factors.

What Dolton households should know

Cook County says $7.5 million will be designated for suburban Cook County residents, with another $7.5 million reserved for Chicago residents. Dolton is within the suburban portion of the program, but the announcement does not identify a separate allocation for the village.

Residents should not assume that every household affected by a 2025 storm will automatically qualify. The county has not yet said what proof applicants will need, including whether applications will require documentation of storm damage, residency, income, insurance status or household expenses.

The county also said requests and appeals for federal disaster assistance were denied. The new county program is intended to provide a separate source of help, although its final rules and available funding limits remain pending.

Dolton also appears in county flood planning

The storm-relief program is separate from Cook County’s longer-term flood-mitigation work in Dolton. County stormwater records list a $300,000 project in the village between 154th and 158th streets, from Clyde Avenue to Greenwood Avenue.

That project is listed in the preliminary-engineering phase. It should not be interpreted as a completed construction project or as a guarantee that flooding will be eliminated in the area.

Cook County’s RainReady Green Infrastructure Plan identifies Dolton as one of six flood-prone Calumet Corridor communities along the Little Calumet River. That designation provides broader context for why storm damage and drainage projects remain significant local issues, but it does not determine eligibility for the household assistance program.

What happens next

Cook County expects to publish application instructions in fall 2026 through Cook County Emergency Management and Regional Security. The county has not yet announced the application opening date, required documents, payment schedule or how it will handle demand if eligible requests exceed available funding.

Dolton residents who experienced qualifying storm damage should watch for the county’s official program guidance before assuming that particular documents or circumstances will meet the final requirements.
