Henderson is pairing green-LiDAR stormwater mapping with specialized rescue training as Southern Nevada enters its July-to-September monsoon season.

Henderson is preparing for Southern Nevada’s monsoon season with two efforts aimed at understanding flood risks and responding when conditions become dangerous: drone-based stormwater mapping and specialized firefighter training.

The City of Henderson’s July 13, 2026, update described drone flights equipped with green LiDAR, a mapping technology that can measure ground conditions beneath shallow water and create detailed three-dimensional maps. The work includes washes, detention basins and other stormwater infrastructure.

According to the city, the information can help staff understand changing conditions, plan maintenance and protect drainage infrastructure. It is a mapping and planning tool, not a guarantee that flooding will be prevented or that a particular road, trail or wash will remain safe during a storm.

Why the mapping matters

Monsoon rainfall can be highly localized. Heavy rain in one part of the Las Vegas Valley can affect streets, channels or washes elsewhere, and developed surfaces can move runoff quickly through drainage systems.

Residents may therefore encounter flooded streets, parks, trails, washes or flood-control channels even when rain at their location appears limited. Henderson’s mapping work is intended to give public-works staff more detailed information about systems that carry or hold stormwater.

Training for difficult rescues

A separate City of Henderson update published July 7 highlighted Henderson Fire’s Technical Rescue Team. The team trains for swift-water rescues and other specialized emergencies, including confined-space, high-angle, trench, vehicle and heavy-machinery rescues.

Swift-water expertise matters during monsoon events because moving water can overwhelm vehicles and knock people off their feet. Flood conditions can also make access and rescue operations more difficult, which is why the department maintains specialized capabilities for complex incidents.

The training update describes preparedness work, not evidence that Henderson is experiencing an active flood emergency. It also does not mean every flooded location can be safely entered by rescuers or residents.

What residents should do

Henderson Emergency Management says Southern Nevada’s monsoon season generally runs from July through September, bringing an increased risk of severe thunderstorms, lightning and flash flooding.

Monitor current National Weather Service alerts and Henderson emergency-management instructions.

If a Flash Flood Warning is issued, move to higher ground immediately and follow evacuation directions.

Never drive, walk or bicycle through moving water, even if the water appears shallow.

Avoid washes, drainage channels, underpasses and low-lying trails during heavy rain or nearby storms.

Do not assume a familiar route is safe because it was open earlier in the day.

Current conditions

As of July 27, 2026, the National Weather Service Las Vegas forecast information reviewed for Henderson showed an Extreme Heat Warning rather than an active Henderson flash-flood warning. That heat alert is separate from the city’s broader seasonal preparation for monsoon flooding.

Residents should use current official alerts for event-specific decisions. Drone mapping and rescue training are preparedness measures; they do not replace real-time warnings, evacuation orders or basic caution around moving water.
