A deadly Kyiv barrage, Zaporizhzhia glide bombs and Ukraine’s deep drone strikes show how attacks are reaching farther beyond the front line.

A Russian missile-and-drone barrage killed at least nine people in Kyiv on August 1, followed by glide-bomb attacks on Zaporizhzhia on August 2. At the same time, Ukrainian drones struck locations inside Russia and occupied Crimea, creating a widening two-sided air campaign far beyond the immediate front line.

The sequence has increased the danger to civilians and infrastructure, put further pressure on Ukraine’s air-defense network and complicated the diplomatic messaging surrounding the war. The reported effects of Ukrainian strikes inside Russia and occupied Crimea remain less independently documented than the civilian damage reported in Ukraine.

Kyiv attack killed at least nine

Russia launched an intense barrage of ballistic missiles and drones at Kyiv overnight into Saturday, August 1. Kyiv authorities told the Associated Press that at least nine people were killed and 33 civilians wounded.

Falling debris and fires damaged residential and other buildings in several districts. Emergency workers evacuated residents from a five-story apartment building in the Solomianskyi district, while officials reported additional deaths and injuries in the Darnytskyi district.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said the barrage targeted Ukrainian military-industrial facilities and logistics centers in Kyiv. That is the Russian government’s account of its intended targets; the civilian deaths and damage were separately reported by Ukrainian authorities and AP.

Glide bombs hit Zaporizhzhia

On Sunday, August 2, Russian aircraft dropped eight glide bombs on residential districts of Zaporizhzhia within about 90 minutes, according to regional chief Ivan Fedorov. AP reported on the attacks August 3.

Fedorov said a 71-year-old woman was killed and 31 people, including a 16-year-old girl, were wounded. He also said 22 apartment buildings in four districts were damaged. These were locally reported figures for a separate attack from the August 1 Kyiv barrage.

Russia’s use of glide bombs adds another challenge for Ukrainian air defenses. AP reported that the weapons can carry large explosive payloads and that Ukraine lacks an effective way to intercept them before they reach populated areas.

Ukrainian drones reached deep inside Russia

Ukraine’s long-range drone campaign continued across Russia and occupied Crimea. Russian officials reported deaths and damage in separate incidents, while AP documented reports of fires and strikes involving industrial and commercial sites, including warehouses operated by Wildberries, Russia’s largest online marketplace.

In one reported incident, a Wildberries warehouse in Russia’s Vladimir region caught fire after a drone strike, and the regional governor said three people were injured. AP also reported that a separate Wildberries warehouse in the Samara region, about 800 kilometers from the Russian-Ukrainian border, was hit and caught fire; the local governor said there were no casualties.

Russian officials said six people were killed by drone debris in Arkhipo-Osipovka in the Krasnodar region and that three others were killed in an attack on occupied Crimea. Those claims, along with the Ukrainian side’s reported strike effects, could not be independently verified, AP said.

The distinction is important. The locations and fires show the geographic reach of the reported drone campaign, but they do not by themselves establish the full casualty count, the military value of the strikes or responsibility for every reported effect.

Zelenskyy links long-range strikes to diplomacy

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine is using long-range strike drones deep inside Russia to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin toward a peace settlement. He said Ukraine would work to make that happen in the fall.

That is Kyiv’s stated rationale, not evidence that negotiations are advancing. The August 1-3 sequence instead shows military escalation and diplomatic messaging continuing at the same time. Any conclusion about a change in the status of peace efforts would require a current, authoritative account of concrete diplomatic contact or an agreement.

UN data shows why the air campaign matters

The United Nations human-rights monitoring mission said at least 293 civilians were killed and 1,990 injured in Ukraine in June 2026, the highest combined monthly total since April 2022. Long-range weapons, including powerful missiles and drones, accounted for 45% of civilian casualties, or 126 deaths and 907 injuries.

The UN said most casualties from those weapons occurred far from the front line in urban centers such as Kyiv and Dnipro. That context helps explain the practical significance of the latest attacks: air-defense planners must protect a wide territory, civilians in major cities remain exposed, and damage to homes, businesses and essential infrastructure can disrupt daily life well beyond active ground combat.

What to watch next

The next indicators will be whether further strike waves follow, whether authorities revise the initial casualty and damage reports, and whether Ukraine receives additional air-defense support, particularly systems capable of countering ballistic missiles.

Readers should separate confirmed civilian harm from official claims about attacks inside enemy territory. The August 1-3 events clearly widened the air dimension of the Russia-Ukraine war, but the full military and humanitarian consequences remain developing.

World Global Priority Scan - A July 2 Russian drone-and-missile strike on Kyiv killed at least 30 people, damaged about 130 buildings, and drew a UN call for an immediate ceasefire.

Russia’s July 2 drone-and-missile strike on Kyiv killed at least 30 people and damaged about 130 buildings, according to Reuters’ updated count. AP’s initial report and a same-day address from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy both put the death toll at 21 before rescue work pushed the number higher.

The attack hit apartments, other residential buildings, and civilian businesses across the capital. Zelenskyy said rescue teams were searching through rubble, more than 100 residential buildings had been damaged, and nearly 100 people had sought medical help. Reuters later said the injured included children, paramedics, and ambulance workers.

UN response: urgent ceasefire call

The UN response was a condemnation and a fresh call for a full, immediate and unconditional ceasefire, not any new peace deal. UN officials said the attack was one of the largest on Kyiv since the war escalated and warned that strikes on civilians and civilian infrastructure must stop.

For readers following the war, the key point is that casualty figures in major strikes can rise quickly as rescuers reach damaged sites. Here, the toll moved from 21 to 30 within a day, showing how much of the human cost is still being counted after the attack.
