Hennepin County approved up to $1.4 million for preliminary design and engineering on CSAH 101 between Gleason Lake Road and Byrondale Avenue.

Hennepin County has authorized preliminary design and engineering for the future reconstruction of County State Aid Highway 101, also known as Wayzata Boulevard/Central Avenue, between Gleason Lake Road and Byrondale Avenue.

The county approved a professional-services agreement with Bolton & Menk Inc. on June 23, 2026. The agreement covers work from August 3, 2026, through October 31, 2028, and is capped at $1.4 million.

The action begins formal engineering for a multiyear reconstruction of a principal Wayzata-area route. Hennepin County is leading the project in partnership with the City of Wayzata.

What the approval does — and does not do

The approved agreement is for preliminary design, engineering and related professional services. It does not mean the CSAH 101 corridor is under construction, and the $1.4 million maximum is the design agreement rather than the eventual construction budget.

The reviewed county action does not establish final construction dates or a final construction cost. It also does not provide the final lane, sidewalk, transit or detour design. Those details may affect residents, commuters and local businesses as the county and city continue design and public-engagement decisions.

For now, drivers should not treat the approval as a notice of immediate reconstruction. The engineering period extends more than two years, through October 31, 2028, while future construction and traffic-control decisions remain unsettled.

Separate road work is scheduled nearby

Wayzata-area drivers also have other road work to track, but the projects are separate. The Minnesota Department of Transportation has scheduled reconstruction and repair work on Highway 12 between Shoreline Drive in Wayzata and I-494 in Minnetonka. MnDOT says that work is planned from April through November 2026 and includes a weekend closure in each direction.

The City of Wayzata separately posted an overnight closure notice for utility work at 720 Wayzata Boulevard. Westbound Wayzata Boulevard was scheduled to close between Broadway Avenue South and Chicago Avenue South from 10 p.m. July 8 to 8 a.m. July 9. The city advised drivers to follow detours and allow extra travel time.

That one-night utility closure and the Highway 12 project should not be combined with the future CSAH 101 reconstruction. The next known phase for the Wayzata Boulevard/Central Avenue project is preliminary engineering beginning August 3, 2026, followed by continued design work through October 31, 2028.

Hennepin County authorized negotiations with Long Lake over a cost-sharing agreement to repair a controlled-access gate linking Trunk Highway 12 and Wayzata Boulevard.

Hennepin County has authorized negotiations with the City of Long Lake over a cooperative agreement that could provide up to $7,318 for repairs to a controlled-access gate used for alternate emergency medical access.

The county action, recorded April 16, 2026, concerns Cooperative Agreement 33-32-26. The gate connects Trunk Highway 12 with County State Aid Highway 112, also known as Wayzata Boulevard.

The agreement is intended to preserve an alternate route for emergency medical personnel when primary routes are blocked or congested. That could help maintain access for emergency medical services, although the approved record does not provide operational data showing that response times have improved.

What the county authorized

The Hennepin County Board of Commissioners authorized negotiation of the agreement with Long Lake. The county’s contribution is not to exceed $7,318.

That action is an authorization to negotiate and should not be read as confirmation that the repair project has been completed. It also does not establish that the county will pay the full $7,318. The final amount would depend on the agreement and the project’s eventual costs.

Long Lake owns and maintains the gate, according to the county’s official record. The city’s responsibility for the facility is part of the arrangement described in the proposed cooperative agreement.

What remains unknown

The reviewed records do not establish when repairs will be completed, who will perform the work, what the final cost will be or whether the gate has already been restored.

They also do not establish that the gate is currently unusable. The available information identifies the gate’s public-safety purpose and the county’s funding authorization, but it does not include a current operating-status update from Long Lake or Hennepin County.

Long Lake City Council minutes dated April 7, 2026, document discussion of city operations and public-safety-related expenditures, providing municipal context for the infrastructure and emergency-access issue. The county’s April 16 action is the specific record authorizing negotiation of the cost-sharing agreement.

The next known step is negotiation of Cooperative Agreement 33-32-26 between Hennepin County and Long Lake. The approved records do not identify a negotiation deadline or a construction schedule.
