Riders heading toward Bethesda, Medical Center, Friendship Heights or destinations beyond North Bethesda must transfer to a free shuttle, use another bus route, drive to a nearby station or consider MARC for select trips.

What remains open from Rockville

Red Line trains continue operating between Shady Grove and North Bethesda. The closed station area includes Grosvenor-Strathmore, Medical Center and Bethesda, where free shuttle buses are replacing trains. A second Red Line segment remains in service between Friendship Heights and Glenmont.

WMATA says the construction work includes a new Bethesda mezzanine intended to connect Metrorail with the future Purple Line, rehabilitation work at Grosvenor-Strathmore and maintenance of the raised railway over Rockville Pike/MD 355.

Free shuttles are the main replacement

WMATA’s free local and express shuttles along Rockville Pike and MD 355 are the most direct replacement for the closed rail segment. The buses are ADA accessible and are scheduled to run every five to eight minutes during Metro rail operating hours.

The local shuttle serves North Bethesda, Grosvenor-Strathmore, Medical Center, Bethesda and Friendship Heights. WMATA lists an average travel time of about 10 minutes between stops. An express shuttle runs from North Bethesda to Friendship Heights, with an average travel time of about 26 minutes.

Those are average shuttle travel times, not guaranteed arrival times. Traffic, boarding delays and crowding can add time, particularly during busy periods.

Temporary bus lanes on Rockville Pike

WMATA says 7.5 lane miles of temporary dedicated bus lanes along Rockville Pike and MD 355 will help move replacement shuttles through the corridor. The lanes were implemented with the Maryland Department of Transportation and Montgomery County Department of Transportation.

Independent reporting by WTOP said the lanes were scheduled to operate Monday through Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. during the Red Line closure. Drivers may enter marked sections where right turns are allowed, so motorists and riders should expect changed traffic patterns along MD 355 and Wisconsin Avenue.

Shuttle stop locations vary by station. At North Bethesda, buses use Bus Bays C and D; other stops include bus bays or temporary curbside locations near Grosvenor-Strathmore, Medical Center, Bethesda and Friendship Heights. Riders should check the current WMATA shuttle map before traveling.

Driving to North Bethesda or Grosvenor-Strathmore

WMATA says free parking will be available at North Bethesda and Grosvenor-Strathmore during the construction period. Availability can change, so riders who drive should check current station information and allow time to park before transferring to a shuttle.

Parking at Rockville MARC Station is different. The Maryland Transit Administration says parking in the Washington Metrorail lot at Rockville is paid.

MARC can help with Silver Spring or Union Station trips

MARC’s Brunswick Line offers a targeted alternative from Rockville Station, mainly for riders headed to Silver Spring or Washington Union Station. WMATA says the special service runs in the morning and evening; it is not an all-day replacement for every Red Line destination.

The MTA‘s special-fare notice lists Rockville-to-Silver Spring fares at $3 one way or $6 round trip. Rockville-to-Union Station fares are $3.50 one way or $7 round trip.

The MTA page describes the Red Line closure for purposes of the fare program as running through September 4, 2026. WMATA’s construction page lists the Red Line construction period through September 6, 2026. Riders should verify the fare program’s applicable date before purchasing a ticket.

MARC advises passengers to arrive 20 minutes before departure because parking lots, platforms and trains may be crowded. Some trains may limit boarding, requiring passengers to wait for the next train. At Rockville, conductors can sell the special one-way or round-trip fares, but onboard purchases require cash; exact change is appreciated.

Plan for a transfer and extra time

For most Rockville riders traveling to stations south of North Bethesda, the simplest option is to remain on the Red Line to North Bethesda and transfer to a free shuttle. MARC is more useful when Silver Spring or Union Station is the destination and the morning-or-evening schedule fits the trip.

Before leaving, check current WMATA and MARC information, confirm the shuttle stop, review parking rules and allow additional time for transfers, waiting and possible crowding. The scheduled WMATA construction end date is September 6, 2026.

For North Bethesda riders, the change is directional: Red Line trains continue between Shady Grove and North Bethesda, but passengers traveling toward Grosvenor-Strathmore, Medical Center, Bethesda or Friendship Heights must transfer to a shuttle.

What North Bethesda riders should expect

WMATA is operating the Red Line in two separate segments during the project. Trains run between Shady Grove and North Bethesda, and separately between Friendship Heights and Glenmont. WMATA says trains operate every six minutes during daytime service and every 10 minutes during late-night service.

Free, ADA-accessible local and express shuttles replace the suspended rail service. WMATA schedules shuttle buses every five to eight minutes during Metro rail operating hours. At North Bethesda, southbound shuttle service boards at Bus Bay C and exits at Bus Bay D.

Local shuttles serve North Bethesda, Grosvenor-Strathmore, Medical Center, Bethesda and Friendship Heights. WMATA lists an average travel time of 10 minutes between local-shuttle stops. Express buses run directly between North Bethesda and Friendship Heights, with an estimated average travel time of 26 minutes. Those figures are estimates, not guarantees, and roadway congestion may add delays.

North Bethesda station remains available for Red Line rail service and parking. Free parking is also available at Grosvenor-Strathmore during the construction period.

Additional closures begin August 2

Montgomery County says the Medical Center and Bethesda stations will have additional closures from August 2 through August 14. During that period, free shuttle buses will operate between Grosvenor-Strathmore and Friendship Heights, stopping at Medical Center and Bethesda.

This August 2-14 change is an additional station closure within the broader Red Line shutdown, not a new full-corridor closure. County officials advise Red Line customers to allow additional travel time.

Road and commuter effects

WMATA and transportation agencies are using 7.5 lane miles of dedicated bus lanes along Rockville Pike and MD 355 to help move replacement buses. The Maryland Transit Administration warns that riders transferring between commuter buses and the Red Line may face delays because of increased roadway congestion and higher passenger volumes.

MTA says commuter buses will continue on their regular schedules, but specifically identifies routes 201, 505 and 515 for the advisory. These options do not serve every trip in the same way, so riders should check route details before leaving.

Why the work is happening

WMATA lists major construction tasks including creation of a second mezzanine at Bethesda to integrate with the MTA Purple Line, rehabilitation of the Grosvenor-Strathmore platform and maintenance of the elevated railway over Rockville Pike between Grosvenor-Strathmore and Medical Center.

WMATA’s primary service window ends September 6, 2026. Montgomery County’s transportation page uses September 7 in its description, so travelers should rely on current WMATA service alerts for the operational end date. Riders should check WMATA and MTA alerts before traveling, particularly during the August 2-14 Medical Center and Bethesda closures.

WMATA says the Metrobus detour is effective Tuesday, June 23 at 10:00 p.m. until Sunday, July 12 at 11:59 p.m.. WMATA also says riders should allow additional travel time and avoid the area if possible.

Great American State Fair: which Metrobus routes detour?

WMATA lists the following routes as affected. Detours operate from 12:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m.:

• D30 N Capitol St northbound towards Fort Totten: buses begin detouring on E St, NW at 7th St, resuming the regular route on N Capitol St, NE at Massachusetts Ave.
• D30 N Capitol St southbound towards L’Enfant Plaza: buses begin detouring on N Capitol St, NW at E St, resuming the regular route on D St, SW at 7th St.
• D40 7 St-Georgia Ave northbound towards Silver Spring: buses begin detouring on E St, SW at 7th St, resuming the regular route on N Capitol St, NE at Massachusetts Ave.
• D40 7 St-Georgia Ave southbound towards L’Enfant Plaza: buses begin detouring on 7th St, NW at Massachusetts Ave, resuming the regular route on D St, SW at 7th St.

How to plan your trip near the Mall

Because detours change where buses run during late-night hours, riders should plan around the cross streets WMATA lists for those routes (not just the usual bus path). In particular, the detour work happens between midnight and 5 a.m., so commuters traveling late at night should double-check their route before leaving.

Also, MPD’s traffic advisory and NPS access rules can affect how you reach (or cross) the Mall area on foot during the event period.

July 4 add-on: more Metrobus detours near the National Mall

WMATA says Metrobus will operate on a regular Saturday schedule on July 4. Customers traveling near the National Mall should expect detours and delays, and some routes may be truncated due to road closures.

WMATA lists these Metrobus routes as detouring on Fourth of July:

• A27, A58, C53, C55
• D1X, D4X, D6X, D10
• D30, D32, D40, D44, D50, D60
• D74, D94, F23
• M22, P12, P21

WMATA also says regular fares are in effect until 5 p.m. on July 4, and that all trips after 5 p.m. will be fare-free. WMATA further says parking at all Metro facilities will be free on the Fourth of July.

Mall public-use limits and screening (last-mile access may change)

The National Park Service says it is imposing temporary closure and public use limits for National Mall and Memorial Parks areas associated with Great American State Fair and the FIFA Fan Zone, from June 10, 2026 through July 24, 2026. The NPS also warns that public entry may be temporarily suspended for safety if attendance is too dense.

For July 4, NPS lists one affected National Mall segment as open to the public from 10:00 a.m. until midnight. NPS also describes security screening and capacity limits, and notes that items like backpacks and bags exceeding size restrictions are restricted.

Driving context: MPD street closures and emergency no-parking

MPD’s traffic advisory says the Great American State Fair will run from Thursday, June 25, 2026 through Friday, July 10, 2026, with parking restrictions and street closures motorists should plan around. MPD also says certain streets closed for setup—such as Madison Drive (3rd to 14th St, NW), Jefferson Drive (3rd to 14th St, SW), and parts of 12th Street—will remain closed after the fair concludes on Friday, July 10, 2026 for event demobilization.

MPD further lists Emergency No Parking postings and vehicle-traffic closures on 7th Street and 4th Street from Wednesday, June 24, 2026 through Sunday, July 11, 2026. MPD notes some streets may be closed intermittently for public safety from Thursday, June 25, 2026 through Friday, July 10, 2026, and says pedestrians may need to undergo security screening. MPD also advises that people who need to cross the Mall area without entering the security perimeter should use 3rd Street or 14th Street.

WMATA’s detours are time-specific and tied to the National Mall event footprint. Before heading out—especially during late-night hours or on July 4—check WMATA’s detour/holiday service notices and verify your route in advance.

The festival runs Thursday, June 4, through Saturday, June 6, at the National Archives Museum on Constitution Avenue. MPD says emergency no-parking restrictions began Thursday, May 28, and run through Monday, June 8, while Constitution Avenue between 7th Street and 9th Street NW is closed to vehicle traffic through the same period.

What is restricted near the Archives

MPD says emergency no-parking signs cover Constitution Avenue from 6th Street to 10th Street NW, 7th Street from Pennsylvania Avenue NW to Madison Drive NW, and 9th Street from Pennsylvania Avenue to Constitution Avenue NW. The advisory also says several nearby streets may face intermittent closures for public safety during the festival, including parts of Constitution Avenue, 6th Street, 7th Street, and 9th Street.

The department says drivers should expect parking enforcement, including ticketing and towing, and possible delays in the area. Officials are urging motorists to consider alternate routes.

WMATA buses are detouring

WMATA says buses on routes D1X, D30, D32, D40, D4X, D44, D60, and D6X will detour from Sunday, May 31, through Monday, June 8, because of the National Archives 250th Celebration build-out.

That can mean a different boarding point, a longer walk from an alternate stop, or more time built into a downtown trip. WMATA is telling riders to check MetroAlerts and Rider Tools before heading out.

Why it matters

The disruption is limited to the corridor around the National Archives and Pennsylvania Avenue, not all of downtown Washington. But that still matters for commuters crossing the federal core, workers headed to nearby offices, visitors coming for the festival, and businesses that rely on normal curb access.

If you are driving, riding Metrobus, or picking someone up nearby, plan for reroutes and extra time through June 8.
