Ann Arbor Residents Protest ICE Actions in Minneapolis

Protesters Rally Against ICE Actions in Minneapolis

On January 30, 2026, hundreds of Ann Arbor residents gathered near the University of Michigan campus to participate in a national demonstration against the Trump administration’s crackdown on immigrants and protesters by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This protest was part of a broader movement sparked by the recent deaths of two individuals in Minneapolis at the hands of federal agents.

Participants marched and chanted, expressing their opposition to the administration’s policies and the actions of ICE. High school student Elliott Paloff voiced concerns about the unchecked power of federal agents, stating, “We’re basically having secret police that can just like take people and can kill them with no real punishment for it.”

University of Michigan student Paige Porter, originally from Chicago, shared her personal experiences with ICE’s actions, emphasizing the widespread impact on communities of color. She remarked, “We [in Chicago] were one of the first to get the experience and see people, black, brown, people that I live with and love, be attacked and violated in their homes and communities and have their lives disrupted.”

The protest in Ann Arbor was part of a larger national movement, with similar demonstrations occurring in other cities, including Minneapolis, where federal agents recently killed two people. The demonstrations call for accountability and an end to aggressive ICE operations targeting immigrants and protesters.
