Council Decisions, Hospital Fire Response Mark Busy Week in Scranton
Hospital Fire Prompts Regional Emergency Response
Emergency crews from across northeastern Pennsylvania responded Wednesday night to a fire at a hospital campus in Dickson City, just outside Scranton. The fire broke out on the roof of an older, attached medical office building and led to the evacuation of more than 70 patients.
No injuries were reported, and patients were transferred to area hospitals as a precaution. Firefighters and police coordinated a large-scale response, and the facility remained closed Thursday while officials assessed smoke and water damage.
City Council Approves Hospital Expansion Zoning
Scranton City Council voted this week to approve a zoning change allowing a major hospital expansion in the Hill Section. The 3–2 vote followed months of debate from nearby residents concerned about building height, traffic, and neighborhood impact.
The zoning amendment clears the way for a multi-story medical building and a new parking garage. Supporters on council cited the need for updated healthcare infrastructure and additional inpatient capacity, while opponents warned about long-term effects on surrounding streets.
Paid Parking Hours Extended Downtown
Council also approved a revised downtown parking plan that extends paid on-street parking hours on weekdays but keeps Saturdays free. Under the new plan, meters will run later Monday through Friday for the next three years.
City leaders described the move as a compromise aimed at stabilizing long-standing parking system debt while responding to concerns from downtown businesses and residents. Parking rates themselves will remain unchanged for now.
Looking Ahead
Between emergency responses, healthcare development decisions, and downtown policy changes, this week highlighted how closely connected Scranton’s public safety, infrastructure, and economic planning remain. More discussion is expected as these decisions begin to take effect.
