Skokie Daily Brief: Water Main Fallout, Village Updates, and a Big Night at the Theater
Skokie, IL — February 6, 2026 — Residents continue to deal with flooding impacts, the village advances policy updates, and Skokie Theater opens a major production.
Water Main Break Aftermath Still Unfolding
Skokie officials are continuing cleanup and coordination efforts following last week’s major water main break that flooded streets, damaged vehicles, and inundated basements in several neighborhoods. The rupture, which occurred on a large transmission main installed in the 1960s, prompted the village to issue an emergency declaration earlier this week.
Residents shared concerns at a recent village meeting, describing delayed responses and extensive personal losses. Village leaders say the emergency declaration is a first step toward seeking county and state assistance. An online portal is now open for residents to submit photos and documentation of damage as the village works with insurers and outside agencies.
Village Board Actions and Policy Changes
The Skokie Village Board has been active in recent days, approving and advancing several policy updates that affect daily life across the village. Among them is a new pilot program regulating short-term rentals, aimed at balancing neighborhood quality of life with limited rental use.
Officials also highlighted recent changes to federal SNAP rules that took effect February 1, which may affect eligibility for some residents. In addition, the board confirmed that a 25 mph speed limit on most residential streets will go into effect March 1, part of a broader traffic safety effort.
Community Health and Hiring Updates
Skokie’s Health and Human Services Department continues to offer free flu and COVID-19 vaccinations on Wednesdays as respiratory illnesses remain elevated across the region. The village is also promoting seasonal job openings in public works, finance, and fire departments, with applications open through mid-April.
Opening Night at Skokie Theater
On a brighter note, Skokie Theater raises the curtain tonight on its production of “Company,” the Stephen Sondheim musical. The show runs through March 1 and brings a steady stream of visitors to the downtown area, supporting nearby restaurants and businesses.
Between recovery efforts, policy changes, and cultural events, it’s a full and eventful Friday across Skokie.
