Gilroy Daily Brief: School Fire Update, City Hall News, and Road Work
School Fire Ruled Arson
Investigators have confirmed that a three-alarm fire that heavily damaged the Gateway School in south Gilroy earlier this week was intentionally set. The blaze broke out Wednesday evening and destroyed most of the school’s main building. Fire crews from multiple departments responded, and no injuries were reported.
Police say there are currently no suspects, and evidence collected at the scene is still being analyzed by the county crime lab. The investigation remains active as officials work to determine who was responsible.
City Hall: Leadership and Community Updates
Gilroy residents will have a chance to meet the city’s new leadership next week. An open house with the city’s new administrator is scheduled for Monday, February 9, just before the regular City Council meeting. The event is intended to give residents an informal opportunity to connect and share concerns.
City officials have also released a letter to the community addressing recent tragedies that have deeply affected local families. In the message, city leadership acknowledged the outpouring of community response and emphasized available resources and support.
Monterey Road Sidewalk Project Begins Soon
Drivers and nearby residents should expect changes along Monterey Road in the coming days. The city is preparing to begin sidewalk installation just north of the Monterey Gateway Apartments. The project will require a northbound lane closure during construction.
City staff say the work is aimed at improving pedestrian safety in a busy corridor and will be coordinated to limit traffic disruption as much as possible.
Looking Ahead
With public safety investigations ongoing and several civic updates unfolding, city officials are encouraging residents to stay informed through official channels and attend upcoming meetings if they want to be involved.
