City officials say the funding helps move the long-discussed project closer to construction, with work expected to begin later this year. Additional county grants and local funding are planned to help cover remaining costs.

Financial relief follows winter water main break

After last winter’s major water main break, Hoboken has secured financial relief and approved upgrades aimed at preventing similar emergencies. The city is installing more than 200 advanced leak detection monitors throughout the water system to catch problems earlier.

A grant program totaling $300,000 is also being prepared to help affected businesses and property owners recover losses tied to the disruption. Officials say details on applications will be announced in the coming weeks.

Waterfront reconstruction work gets underway

Construction has begun on the first phase of Hoboken’s Waterfront Reconstruction Project, focused on stabilizing the aging seawall beneath Sinatra Drive. The work follows the discovery of erosion-related voids beneath the structure last year.

Early activity includes removing benches and surface features, with heavier construction planned near the skate park area in the coming weeks. Most equipment will arrive by barge to reduce traffic impacts, and weekday work hours are currently scheduled.
