Extreme Cold and Wind Take Center Stage in York

Arctic Cold Arrives Tonight

York is heading into the coldest stretch of the winter so far, with an Extreme Cold Warning set to begin early Saturday morning. Wind chills are expected to drop as low as 20 below zero, especially overnight and during the early morning hours.

Along with the cold, strong northwest winds could gust up to 50 miles per hour. Those conditions raise the risk of downed tree limbs and scattered power outages, particularly in more exposed areas.

Wind Advisory Adds to Travel Concerns

A Wind Advisory is also in effect through Saturday evening. Even light snow and blowing debris could reduce visibility at times, making travel tricky, especially for high-profile vehicles on open roads.

Officials are urging residents to secure outdoor items, limit time outside, and dress in layers if travel is necessary. Frostbite can occur in under 30 minutes when skin is exposed.

Air Quality Alert Issued

In addition to the cold, a Code Orange Air Quality Alert is in place for York County and much of the Susquehanna Valley through tonight. Air pollution levels may be unhealthy for sensitive groups, including children, older adults, and those with heart or lung conditions.

Residents in these groups are encouraged to avoid strenuous outdoor activity until conditions improve.

While temperatures are expected to slowly moderate early next week, forecasters say the bitter cold will linger through the weekend. This stretch is shaping up to be the harshest weather York has seen this winter, and a good reminder to check on neighbors and loved ones who may need extra help staying warm.
