City charter study panel keeps meeting
Hazleton’s Government Study Commission is continuing its months-long review of how city government is structured, with regular public meetings scheduled on the first and third Wednesdays of each month at City Hall through August 2026.
The most recent session was held February 4 on the second floor of City Hall, where members worked through questions about possible changes to the city’s governing framework. Residents can attend upcoming meetings at 5 p.m. to listen in and offer public comment as the commission moves toward recommendations that could eventually appear on the ballot.
Police department opens testing for new officers
The Hazleton Police Department is preparing for its next round of officer hiring and is now accepting applications for police candidate testing. Applications can be picked up at the police building on North Church Street or downloaded from the department’s website.
Completed applications are due in person by 4 p.m. on Friday, February 20, with a written and physical testing date set for Saturday, February 28. City officials say the process is aimed at adding to the 24-hour department’s staffing while maintaining standards for training and community-focused policing.
