Today in Kirkwood: Schools, art, business and books
Kirkwood, MO — February 7, 2026 — School board races, student art honors and a local toy shop’s expansion headline today’s neighborhood news.
Today in Kirkwood
Good morning, Kirkwood. Here is a quick look at what is making news around town as the weekend gets underway.
School board campaign heads into public forum
The Kirkwood School District has announced a Board of Education candidate forum to be moderated by the League of Women Voters next month. The event will give voters a chance to hear from those running for the board before the April municipal election, with candidates expected to discuss priorities such as classroom resources, student well being and facility needs.
The forum will be held in the Keating Theatre and is part of the district's push to make school board elections easier to follow. Details on the exact format and how to submit questions are being shared with families and posted on district channels.
Nipher student art featured in SLSO exhibit
A seventh grader from Nipher Middle School has had artwork selected for the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra's Picture the Music exhibit. The regional program invites students to create visual art inspired by orchestral pieces, and only a limited number of works are chosen each year.
The recognition puts a spotlight on Kirkwood's arts programs and gives the student a chance to see their work displayed alongside pieces from across the metro area. District leaders say opportunities like this help keep creative outlets front and center for middle schoolers.
Downtown toy shop fuels expansion to Chesterfield
On the business front, a Kirkwood based Lego specialty store is using its success here to expand. The MiniFig Shop, which caters to brick collectors and families, is preparing to open a second location at The District of St. Louis in Chesterfield Valley.
The owners say strong foot traffic and community support in downtown Kirkwood made it possible to grow. The new store will mirror the flagship shop's mix of new sets, hard to find minifigures and build tables, while the Kirkwood location continues to anchor the brand.
Library events and a quick look at today
The Kirkwood Public Library wrapped up a hands on Playdoh Friday session for preschoolers yesterday and is turning toward genealogy help and family reading programs early next week. Registration is open now for an Ancestry Library Edition workshop and an at home family book club kit pickup on Monday.
For today, February 7, sunrise is just before 7 a.m. and sunset is a little after 5:30 p.m., giving Kirkwood a bit more than ten and a half hours of daylight as we move deeper into February.
