Council sets 2026 goals

City leaders have agreed on a slate of goals for 2026 that put long-term land use and basic services front and center. At a recent retreat, councilors focused on three big threads: what to do with hundreds of acres owned by the Portland Pipe Line, how to move forward on the costly Mahoney City Center plan, and how to keep roads and other infrastructure from falling behind.

On the pipeline land, councilors signaled they want a clearer roadmap for redeveloping large, underused parcels in ways that add much-needed housing while easing pressure on already busy corridors like Broadway. Housing officials say the city could eventually see more than a thousand new homes if the land is thoughtfully planned.

The Mahoney project remains one of the thorniest issues. Updated cost estimates for turning the former middle school into a combined city services campus, with new public safety facilities and a library, have soared far beyond early projections. Councilors still say “do nothing” is not an option, but they will need to settle on a plan by this summer if they want a bond on the November ballot. Those decisions will be guided by a new comprehensive plan, now in draft form, with public feedback open through February 15.

City presses for accountability after ICE surge

Earlier this week, the council unanimously adopted a resolution responding to a surge in federal immigration enforcement that shook neighborhoods in January. The measure formally acknowledges the fear caused by masked officers and unmarked vehicles, and calls on federal agencies to clearly identify themselves, explain the scope of their operations, and coordinate with local officials.

The resolution also reaffirms that city departments, including police, will not take on immigration enforcement roles beyond what the law strictly requires. It urges state leaders to push for more oversight of federal activity and to consider extra protections for households facing eviction because of lost income tied to arrests or detentions.

Schools ease temporary supports

South Portland Schools told families this week that enhanced immigration operations in Maine have officially ended, and that student attendance has begun to rebound. Temporary supports the district put in place for students directly affected by the raids are scheduled to wind down after February 6, though officials say they will keep watching attendance and community needs closely and can pivot if the situation changes.

District leaders also thanked neighbors, staff and volunteers who stepped in with rides, child care and other practical help while many families were afraid to leave home.
