City brief: Grant targets senior isolation

Fairfax Village in the City has received a $10,000 state grant to reduce social isolation among older residents. The money will fund volunteer training on communication skills, recognizing safety concerns and staying in regular touch with neighbors who may be alone. City staff say the effort treats isolation as a health risk and should expand friendly check-ins and referrals to local services.

Traffic watch: Walk for Peace on the way

A 2,300-mile Walk for Peace led by Buddhist monks is expected to reach Fairfax County on Sunday, bringing temporary closures and delays along parts of Richmond Highway and nearby roads. Police plan to escort the group as it enters near Lorton around 8 a.m., with northbound Richmond Highway at Furnace Road closing while the walkers use the full roadway. After a parade and peace ceremony at a temple off Backlick Road, the procession continues north with rolling closures into the evening. The walk resumes early Monday toward the George Washington Memorial Parkway. Drivers are urged to build in extra time and avoid stopping in travel lanes to watch.

Weekend in town: Chocolate and Lunar New Year

Old Town Fairfax is in festival mode as the annual Chocolate Lovers Festival continues through Sunday, bringing tastings, family activities and historic tours to downtown. Many events are clustered along Main Street. At the Fairfax County Government Center today, a free Lunar New Year celebration is offering cultural performances, crafts and samples of Asian cuisine from late morning into midafternoon, highlighting traditions from several Asian communities.

Looking ahead this month

Earlier this week, the City of Fairfax School Board approved a $76.9 million budget for the next fiscal year, with most funding devoted to tuition payments and shared operating costs with Fairfax County Public Schools and additional dollars for summer programs, student transitions and staff training. February is also being recognized as Black History Month countywide, with a community celebration later this month at the Government Center featuring performances, activities and conversations on local history and leadership.
