City updates: alerts and water system work

Melissa is rolling out a new emergency alert system, moving residents from the old CodeRED platform to Everbridge for weather and public safety notifications. The system can send targeted alerts by phone, text, email and app so the city can reach only the neighborhoods directly affected during storms, outages or other emergencies.

At the same time, officials are reminding neighbors that the North Texas Municipal Water District will run its annual system maintenance March 2–30. During that window the disinfectant mix will temporarily change, which may make chlorine taste or odor more noticeable, but the water will continue to meet all state and federal safety standards.

This weekend around town

It is a busy weekend for local students and families. Melissa High School Theatre is in the middle of its run of the musical ‘Pippin,’ with performances at the Melissa Arts Center through tonight after opening earlier in the week.

On the same campus, Melissa High School is hosting the Melissa Spring Classic speech and debate tournament Friday and Saturday, while the booster club’s Daddy Daughter Dance fills the Student Union on Saturday evening. The city’s community calendar also lists a Strength Training and Yoga class on Saturday as part of an ongoing wellness series.

Cardinals in the spotlight

On the sports side, the Melissa Cardinals boys basketball team traveled to face McKinney North on Friday night in district play, aiming to follow up on a double‑digit home win over the Bulldogs last month as the postseason race tightens.

Earlier this week, Melissa High School hosted its third signing day of the school year, recognizing seniors who have committed to compete at the college level and spotlighting the support they have received from families, teachers and coaches.

Coming up next week

Looking ahead, the Melissa Area Chamber of Commerce is preparing for its February networking luncheon on Tuesday, bringing together local business owners and regional leaders to talk about growth in and around the city. Later in the week, ribbon cuttings are scheduled for new businesses, including Beans and Bubbles and ATI Physical Therapy, giving neighbors a chance to welcome new employers to town.
