Employers wrap up state labor-law conference

Downtown stayed busy Friday as employers from across the region met at Hotel Settles for the Texas Conference for Employers. The one day session focused on state and federal labor law updates, unemployment claims, and practical tips for handling HR issues.

The event brought local business owners, HR staff, and managers into the same room with state experts. For Big Spring, it was a chance to put the city in front of decision makers while giving local employers help navigating new rules and avoiding costly mistakes.

Council races open in Districts 1 and 3

The filing period is underway for two Big Spring City Council seats, District 1 and District 3, with the deadline to file coming up on February 13. Residents who want a spot on the May ballot must submit their paperwork to the City Secretary’s Office at City Hall by 5 p.m. that day.

City leaders are encouraging interested residents to review eligibility requirements and consider stepping forward. Competitive races could shape how the city tackles priorities like infrastructure, public safety, and economic growth over the next few years.

Busy February at City Hall and around town

The coming week is stacked with meetings and events. On Tuesday, the Big Spring Economic Development Corporation holds a special board meeting at 2 p.m., followed by the regular City Council meeting at 5:30 p.m. at the council chambers.

Later in the month, District 2 residents will have Large and Bulk Item Pickup on February 18, giving neighbors a chance to clear out bigger trash without a trip to the landfill. On February 21, the Big Spring Symphony Orchestra returns to the Municipal Auditorium with its “Musical Tales & Treasures” program, bringing a night of live music to the downtown venue.

Water system stable after late January issues

After frozen and broken lines triggered a boil water notice at the end of January, city officials say the system has stabilized and the notice has been lifted. While service is back to normal, residents are being reminded to report any lingering leaks so repairs can be made before the next cold snap.
