Good morning, Maitland. Here is a quick look at what is happening around town today, from your election calendar to weekend events and growth news.

City election countdown

Maitland’s next municipal election is set for March 10, with City Council Seat 2 on the ballot after drawing two qualified candidates. Seat 4 has already been filled after the incumbent drew no opposition.

The voter registration books close Monday, February 9, at 5 p.m. for anyone who wants to take part in this election. Residents who plan to vote by mail have until February 26 to request a ballot, and early voting runs March 2 through March 8 at county locations, before Maitland polling places open on Election Day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Weekend in downtown Maitland

Downtown was busy Friday night as the Getdown Downtown street party returned to Independence Square. The first-Friday gathering brings live music, food vendors, and kids’ activities to the heart of the city, and it is scheduled to return again next month.

Today, Sunday, February 8, the weekly farmers market runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Independence Square. Shoppers can browse fresh produce, baked goods, plants, and crafts, and the city calendar also highlights this month’s Movies in the Park event at the same location later in February.

Housing and development updates

The city has posted information to help residents and property owners understand how the state’s Live Local Act affects local development. The law encourages affordable housing by allowing qualifying mixed-use and multifamily projects in commercial and industrial areas when a share of units are reserved at affordable rates, so long as at least 40 percent of the homes stay affordable for income-eligible households for 30 years and, in mixed-use buildings, at least 65 percent of the total space is devoted to housing.

City planners continue to work within the long-range 2035 Comprehensive Development Plan and the updated Land Development Code, which aim to balance redevelopment with protection of lakes, parks, and neighborhoods.
