Philadelphia Local Briefing: Courts, Culture, Closures, and a Major Storm
Philadelphia Daily Briefing
City braces for major nor’easter and deep freeze
Philadelphia is preparing for a powerful nor’easter expected to hammer the region from Sunday into Monday, with forecasters warning of heavy snow, strong winds, and dangerous travel. Officials have declared a ‘code blue’ through midweek, opening extra warming centers and outreach for people experiencing homelessness.
The School District of Philadelphia is shifting to virtual learning on Monday to keep buses and students off icy roads. State transportation crews report tens of thousands of tons of road salt and more than a hundred plow trucks on standby across southeastern Pennsylvania. Drivers are being urged to avoid unnecessary travel once snow intensifies and to watch for vehicle restrictions on major highways.
Slavery exhibit returns to President’s House on Independence Mall
Advocates and historians are celebrating the restoration of slavery exhibits at the President’s House site on Independence Mall. The displays, which tell the stories of nine enslaved people held by George Washington while he lived in Philadelphia, were abruptly removed earlier this year under a federal review order.
A federal judge ordered the National Park Service to reinstall the panels, calling the removal an overreach that threatened to rewrite public history. Workers began reinstalling the exhibit late this week, and community members gathered at the site to mark the return. City officials have framed the ruling as a win for honest storytelling about the nation’s founding, especially as Philadelphia gears up for the 250th anniversary of American independence.
Asian American film festival faces funding crisis
The Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival, a key platform for Asian and Pacific Islander filmmakers, is warning it may not survive the year without a major infusion of support. Organizers say cuts to diversity-focused arts funding and the loss of a major sponsor have opened a six-figure budget gap.
The nonprofit is seeking to raise about $150,000 in the coming weeks to avoid deep cuts to screenings, workshops, and community programs planned for 2026. Festival leaders argue that, at a moment when many cultural narratives are under pressure, losing one of the city’s few dedicated Asian American arts institutions would leave a significant hole in Philadelphia’s creative landscape.
Beloved specialty foods and cookie brands scale back in region
Philadelphians are also seeing changes on the food front. Di Bruno Bros., the long-running specialty Italian foods brand, is closing more than half of its area locations after a recent ownership change, though its Rittenhouse flagship and Italian Market bottle shop will remain open.
Separately, popular cookie company Taylor Chip has entered bankruptcy proceedings and is closing Philadelphia shops as part of a broader restructuring. Some suburban and central Pennsylvania locations are expected to continue operating, but the local closures underscore the pressure facing smaller food retailers after rapid expansion and rising costs.
Police seek driver in hit-and-run that injured 9-year-old
Police continue to search for a driver who struck a 9-year-old boy in a hit-and-run in West Philadelphia last weekend. Investigators say the child was hit in the 800 block of South 56th Street by a burgundy crossover-style vehicle that fled the scene.
The boy was hospitalized and reported in stable condition days after the crash. Detectives are asking neighbors with security cameras or dashcams to review footage from the early afternoon of the incident and to report any sightings of a vehicle matching the description.
