Stormy weekend leaves San Diego cleaning up

County issues coastal water bacteria advisory

The county has issued a general rain advisory for beaches from San Onofre down to the border, including Mission Bay and San Diego Bay, after the latest storm sent urban runoff rushing into coastal waters. Health officials warn that bacteria levels typically spike for several days after significant rainfall, especially near storm drains, creeks, and lagoon outlets.

People are being advised to avoid swimming, surfing, or diving for at least 72 hours after the rain. Water quality staff will continue testing along the coastline, and the advisory is expected to be lifted once samples show bacteria levels have dropped back within health standards.

Novartis expands biotech footprint in San Diego

In brighter economic news, global drugmaker Novartis has begun work on a major new biomedical research center in San Diego. The state-of-the-art facility, planned at roughly 466,000 square feet, is expected to bring around 1,000 research and support jobs to the region once fully built out later this decade.

The site will focus on areas such as neuroscience, oncology, and advanced therapies, and will plug into San Diego’s already strong life sciences ecosystem anchored by UC San Diego, the Salk Institute, and dozens of biotech startups. Local leaders say the project underscores the city’s status as a global hub for biomedical innovation and could attract additional investment and collaboration.

With storm recovery still underway along the coast and long-term investment growing in the research sector, San Diego starts the week balancing short-term cleanup with big-picture economic momentum.
