Santa Clarita Daily Brief: Poisoning arrest, crash warrants, and City Hall votes

Public safety

Deputies say a 42-year-old man was arrested in Saugus after a reported poisoning incident and an hours-long barricade at a home on Cedar Ridge Court. Authorities said a mental health team helped negotiate the suspect out of the residence, and investigators later served a search warrant and recovered evidence tied to the allegation.

In another case, federal court records describe the arrest of an 18-year-old from Pennsylvania after an FBI raid in Castaic. Prosecutors allege he groomed a 13-year-old online and traveled to Southern California; a judge ordered him held without bail, according to the filing.

Traffic investigation update

Detectives are seeking vehicle data from a Feb. 6 crash at Bouquet Canyon and Newhall Ranch roads that killed a Canyon Country couple and seriously injured their daughter. Investigators say onboard event data recorders and other evidence could help clarify the lead-up to the collision, including suspected impairment.

City Hall

Santa Clarita leaders this week recapped actions from the Feb. 24 City Council meeting, including contract awards for a public opinion poll, security camera replacements at key transit facilities, and a concrete rehabilitation program for 2025–26.

Separately, the council voted 4–1 to deny an appeal seeking a path to a self-storage use at a Lyons Avenue retail center near Orchard Village Road. Council members cited concerns about setting precedents for corridor land uses and maintaining job-creating retail space in a high-priority area.

Business and schools

The Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce announced its 2026 Business Expo for June 11 at Valencia Town Center, pitching it as a large local showcase for exhibitors and community networking.

And on campus, the Hart district’s student film festival recently brought dozens of short films to the big screen at Valencia High, with audience voting helping decide awards across multiple categories.
