Columbus Daily Local Brief: Budget tweaks, data centers, and crisis response
Columbus, OH – February 27, 2026 – Council eyes budget changes and a data-center hearing as crisis-response plans advance; chase ends in home crash.
Columbus heads into the weekend with City Hall decisions that could shape everything from emergency response to utility bills.
1) City Council schedules a public look at data centers and local impacts
City Council is planning a hearing focused on the fast-growing data center footprint around central Ohio. The discussion is expected to zero in on infrastructure pressure, including electricity demand and water use. While many facilities sit outside city limits, Columbus is a major water provider for the region, and officials have tied long-term system expansion to rapid growth.
2) Budget revisions: Council moves to restore cuts to courts, shelters, and health care
Council members say they intend to amend the mayor’s proposed 2026 operating budget, aiming to put funding back into services that drew concern during hearings this week. Areas flagged for restoration include court operations, homeless shelter support, and care options for uninsured residents. A vote on amendments is expected at the March 2 council meeting.
3) Non-police crisis response gains momentum ahead of a possible May ballot question
A citizen-backed effort is pushing a charter amendment for a 24-hour alternative response team for certain mental health, welfare-check, and substance-use calls. Separately, the city says its current clinician-led pilot will expand, with plans to add staff and begin sending public health clinicians to some calls without police escorts later this year, pending budget approval.
4) Public safety note: High-speed pursuit ends with vehicle crashing into a north Columbus home
State troopers said an overnight pursuit reached very high speeds before the driver lost control and crashed into a home in the Sharon Woods area. Authorities reported no injuries inside the home, and the driver was taken into custody soon after.
